Meaning

Al-Hadi explained.

Al-Hadi (الْهَادِيْ) means The Guide. It is name 94 in the well-known list of the 99 Names of Allah. Al-Hādī guides: He shows every creature what it needs to live, and He guides hearts to the truth. In every rakʿah we ask Him: guide us to the straight path.

The root and its meaning

Al-Hadi comes from the Arabic root ه د ي (h-d-y), which carries the sense of guiding.

Where it is in the Quran

The form hādī is used of Allah in 22:54 and 25:31.

Surah Al-Furqaan 25:31

Wa kazaalika ja'alnaa likulli Nabiyyin 'aduwwam minal mujrimeen; wa kafaa bi Rabbika haadiyanw wa naseeraa

And thus have We made for every prophet an enemy from among the criminals. But sufficient is your Lord as a guide and a helper.

Quran 25:31. Arabic: Uthmani text (Tanzil). English: Sahih International.

Surah Al-Hajj 22:54

Wa liya'lamal lazeena ootul 'ilma annahul haqqu mir Rabbika fa yu'minoo bihee fatukhbita ahoo quloobuhum; wa innal laaha lahaadil lazeena aamanoo ilaa Siraatim Mustaqeem

And so those who were given knowledge may know that it is the truth from your Lord and [therefore] believe in it, and their hearts humbly submit to it. And indeed is Allah the Guide of those who have believed to a straight path.

Quran 22:54. Arabic: Uthmani text (Tanzil). English: Sahih International.
