Short answer: the Quran says Allah created humans and jinn to worship Him (51:56). Worship here is wide: it covers prayer, and also work, family, kindness and honesty done for Allah. Life is also a test of who does best (67:2), and humans are placed on earth as stewards (2:30). The goal is to return to Allah pleased and pleasing, and to enter Paradise.
To worship Allah
The most direct answer in the Quran is one verse:
وَمَا خَلَقْتُ ٱلْجِنَّ وَٱلْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ ﴿٥٦﴾
Wa maa khalaqtul jinna wal insa illaa liya'budoon
And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.
Quran 51:56 · Sahih International · Read Surah Adh-Dhariyat
The Arabic word is ʿibādah. It shares a root with ʿabd, a servant. To worship Allah is to live as His servant: to know Him, love Him, obey Him and turn to Him. Some early commentators, quoted by Ibn Kathir, explained "except to worship Me" as "except to know Me", since worship begins with knowing Him.
Allah does not need this worship. He says: "O mankind, you are those in need of Allah, while Allah is the Free of need, the Praiseworthy" (35:15). In a hadith qudsi He says: "O My servants, you will not reach harming Me so as to harm Me, nor will you reach benefiting Me so as to benefit Me" (Sahih Muslim 2577). Worship is for our good, not His.
Worship is more than prayer
Prayer, fasting, zakat and Hajj are the pillars, and nothing replaces them. But the Prophet ﷺ taught that ordinary life becomes worship with the right intention:
- "You will not spend anything seeking the face of Allah except that you will be rewarded for it, even what you put in your wife's mouth" (Sahih al-Bukhari 56).
- When he said that even intimacy with your spouse is charity, the Companions were surprised. He explained that if it were done in a haram way it would be a sin, so done in a halal way it is rewarded (Sahih Muslim 1006).
- "Removing something harmful from the road is charity", and a good word is charity (Sahih al-Bukhari 2989; Sahih Muslim 1009).
- "The most beloved people to Allah are those most beneficial to people" (al-Tabarani, al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, graded hasan by al-Albani).
So the purpose of life is not to leave the world for a prayer mat. It is to do the five daily prayers, and then to carry the same intention into work, study and family.
To be tested
Allazee khalaqal mawta walhayaata liyabluwakum ayyukum ahsanu 'amalaa; wa huwal 'azeezul ghafoor
[He] who created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed - and He is the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving -
Quran 67:2 · Sahih International · Read Surah Al-Mulk
The test is not about who has the most. It is about who is "best in deed". Health and wealth are tests of gratitude, and illness and loss are tests of patience: "We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient" (2:155).
Allah already knows the result. The test is so that we see it, and so that our reward or loss is earned by what we actually chose. The Prophet ﷺ said: "How wonderful is the affair of the believer, for all of it is good. If good comes to him he is grateful, and that is good for him. If harm comes to him he is patient, and that is good for him" (Sahih Muslim 2999).
To be Allah's stewards on earth
Wa iz qaala rabbuka lil malaaa'ikati innee jaa'ilun fil ardi khaleefatan qaalooo ataj'alu feehaa mai yufsidu feehaa wa yasfikud dimaaa'a wa nahnu nusabbihu bihamdika wa nuqaddisu laka qaala inneee a'lamu maa laa ta'lamoon
And [mention, O Muhammad], when your Lord said to the angels, "Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority." They said, "Will You place upon it one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood, while we declare Your praise and sanctify You?" Allah said, "Indeed, I know that which you do not know."
Quran 2:30 · Sahih International · Read Surah Al-Baqarah
The word khalīfah means a successor or steward: one who looks after something on behalf of another. Humans were given the earth to build, to farm, to rule justly and to care for. The Quran also calls this the trust (amānah) that the heavens, the earth and the mountains declined and humans took on (33:72).
So caring for people, animals and the earth is part of the purpose, not a distraction from it.
We were not created in vain
أَفَحَسِبْتُمْ أَنَّمَا خَلَقْنَٰكُمْ عَبَثًۭا وَأَنَّكُمْ إِلَيْنَا لَا تُرْجَعُونَ ﴿١١٥﴾
Afahsibtum annamaa khalaqnaakum 'abasanw wa annakum ilainaa laa turja'oon
Then did you think that We created you uselessly and that to Us you would not be returned?"
Quran 23:115 · Sahih International · Read Surah Al-Muminun
The Quran describes believers who look at the sky and say: "Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly" (3:191). Life is going somewhere: to death, to barzakh, to resurrection and judgement, and then to the final home. Read more on barzakh and the afterlife and Jannah.
The fitrah: why the question feels so important
The Quran says Allah made human beings with a natural disposition, the fiṭrah, that recognises Him (30:30). Before this life, the souls of the children of Adam bore witness that Allah is their Lord (7:172). The Prophet ﷺ said: "Every child is born upon the fitrah" (Sahih al-Bukhari 1385; Sahih Muslim 2658).
Islam's answer is that the restlessness people feel when life seems pointless is that fitrah calling them back. "Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured" (13:28).
What this means for an ordinary day
- Anchor the day in salah. Five prayers turn a day of tasks into a day built around Allah. Start with our step-by-step prayer guide if you are learning.
- Renew your intention. Before work or study, intend it for Allah: to provide for your family, to be useful, to avoid asking people.
- Remember Him often. Short dhikr such as SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah and Allahu akbar fills the gaps of the day.
- Serve someone. One act of kindness a day is part of the purpose, not extra to it.
- Remember the end. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Be in this world as if you were a stranger or a traveller" (Sahih al-Bukhari 6416).
Questions
Why did Allah create us if He does not need us?
Out of His generosity, so that we can know Him and receive His mercy. The Quran is clear that He is free of need (35:15). Worship benefits us, not Him.
If Allah already knows everything, why test us?
So that the outcome is seen and earned. Reward and punishment follow what people actually do, not what Allah knew they would do.
Does the purpose of life mean only praying?
No. The obligatory worship comes first, but work, family, study and kindness done for Allah are also worship, as many hadith show.
What is the meaning of life according to the Quran?
To know and worship Allah (51:56), to be tested by good and bad (67:2), and to look after the earth as His stewards (2:30), then return to Him.
Why is there suffering if life has a purpose?
The Quran presents hardship as part of the test (2:155) and promises that with hardship comes ease (94:5-6). Patience in suffering is rewarded, and nothing is lost with Allah.
