Guide
What is the Noorani Qaida, and how to use it.
The Noorani Qaida is a beginner's course in reading the Quran, compiled by Shaykh Noor Muhammad Ludhianvi in India in the early twentieth century. It is taught to children and new readers across South Asia and the West, and moves step by step from the letters to joined letters, vowels, long vowels, stops and doubled letters, until the student can read the Quran.
How long does it take?
With 15 to 20 minutes a day, most children finish it in three to six months, and many adults in one to three. Going slowly and correctly is better than rushing.
Tips for parents
- Keep sessions short and daily: ten focused minutes beat an hour once a week.
- Let your child tap and say each cell aloud, then mark it as known together.
- Do not move on until the current lesson is smooth. Weak foundations show up later in Quran reading.
- Have a qualified teacher listen at least once a week to correct pronunciation.
About these lessons
These grids are our own, set in real Arabic text in the standard order of the qaida, so they can be read on any screen and zoomed. They are not copies of any printed edition. Letter names have audio now, and we plan to add recordings of the syllables in the other lessons.
After the qaida
Start reading the short surahs with audio, then move to the full Quran with transliteration, and learn the rules of tajwid with a teacher.
