Meaning and lessons

What Quran 2:98 means, in brief.

The ayah before this one (2:97) answers some of the Jews of Madinah who said that Jibril was their enemy among the angels, because he brought punishment, and so they would not believe in what he brought. Allah replies that whoever is an enemy to Allah, His angels, His messengers, Jibril and Mikail, then Allah is an enemy to the disbelievers.

Ibn Kathir cites the story of Abdullah ibn Salam, who asked the Prophet ﷺ three questions and was told that Jibril had brought the answers; he replied that Jibril is the enemy of the Jews among the angels (Sahih al-Bukhari). The lesson Ibn Kathir draws: the angels are one obedient body of Allah's servants, so hostility to one of them is hostility to Allah who sent him.

Summarised in our own words from Tafsir Ibn Kathir, on Quran 2:98. Translation of the ayah: Sahih International.
