Meaning and lessons

What Quran 28:77 means, in brief.

These are the words of the people of Qarun, a very rich man of Musa's nation, advising him. Use what Allah has given you to seek the home of the Hereafter, but do not forget your share of this world. Do good as Allah has been good to you, and do not seek corruption in the land.

Ibn Kathir explains that "your share of the world" is what Allah has made lawful of food, drink, clothing, homes and marriage, because your Lord has a right over you, your body has a right over you, and your family has a right over you. Qarun rejected the advice and said his wealth came from his own knowledge, and the earth swallowed him and his house (28:78 to 81).

Summarised in our own words from Tafsir Ibn Kathir, on Quran 28:77. Translation of the ayah: Sahih International.

Lessons from this ayah

  • Wealth is a tool to reach the Hereafter, not an end in itself.
  • Enjoying what is lawful is part of a balanced faith.
  • Repay Allah's goodness by doing good to people.
  • Arrogance about wealth ruined Qarun.
