Meaning and lessons
Allah says twice: with hardship comes ease; indeed, with hardship comes ease. Surah Ash-Sharh was revealed in Makkah when the Prophet ﷺ faced great difficulty, and it reminds him of what Allah had already done for him: opening his chest, removing his burden and raising his mention.
Ibn Kathir explains that the repetition is for emphasis and is a promise: ease comes with the hardship, not only after it. He reports the saying "one hardship will not overcome two eases", from the early generations, because in Arabic "the hardship" is definite and the same in both ayat, while "ease" is indefinite and so counts as two. The surah ends: when you are free, keep working, and turn to your Lord with hope.
