Guide

Fasting in Blackburn this Ramadan.

This calendar covers Ramadan 1448, which falls in February and March 2027 in United Kingdom. The fasts start short, at about 11 h 21 min, and get longer each day as sunrise comes earlier and sunset later.

Why masjid timetables in Blackburn differ

Sunset is the same for everyone, so iftar times agree to within a minute or two. Sehri is where timetables differ, because methods put Fajr at different sun angles. On the first fast, 5:44 AM with this calendar's 18° becomes 6:04 AM with ISNA's 15°, a difference of 20 minutes. If your masjid's sehri is earlier than ours, it probably uses a deeper angle or adds a safety margin. Follow your masjid.

The madhhab does not change sehri or iftar. All four schools agree the fast runs from true dawn to sunset. The Hanafi and other schools differ only on the start of Asr, which is why the prayer times page shows two Asr times.

In the UK, clocks go forward on 28 March 2027, after Ramadan ends, so every time in this calendar is in GMT.

When sehri ends and iftar begins

The fast begins at true dawn, the start of Fajr, and ends at sunset, the start of Maghrib. Allah says: "Eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread of night. Then complete the fast until the night."1 So the "Sehri ends" column is the latest moment to finish eating in Blackburn, and the "Iftar" column is when you break the fast.

Many printed timetables stop sehri about 10 minutes before Fajr as a safety margin, often called imsak. It is a precaution, not a separate time in the Sharia. Use the "5 min before" or "10 min before" switch if your masjid's timetable does this.

The intention for the fast

Hanafi position

The intention for a Ramadan fast is made in the heart and does not have to be said aloud. It is valid from sunset the night before until just before the midpoint of the day (al-dahwa al-kubra), as long as you have not eaten. Waking for sehri with the fast in mind already counts as the intention.2

Other madhhabs
Shafi'i
The intention for each obligatory fast must be made during the night before dawn.
Maliki
One intention at the start of Ramadan covers the whole month, as long as the fasting is not broken by a gap.
Hanbali
The intention must be made during the night, before dawn, for each day of Ramadan.

Laylat al-Qadr and the last ten nights

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Seek Laylat al-Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan."3 With a start on 8 February, the odd nights begin at sunset on 27 February (21st), 1 March (23rd), 3 March (25th), 5 March (27th) and 7 March (29th). See the Laylat al-Qadr page for the nights in your time zone.

Duas for sehri and iftar

At iftar the Prophet ﷺ would say: Dhahaba al-ẓamaʾu wabtallat al-ʿurūqu wa thabata al-ajru in shāʾ Allāh, "The thirst is gone, the veins are moist, and the reward is certain, if Allah wills."4 The dua for breaking the fast page has the Arabic and its source.

  1. Quran 2:187, translation by Sahih International.
  2. Al-Marghinani, al-Hidayah, Kitab al-Sawm. The other madhhabs' positions are summarised from their standard manuals.
  3. Sahih al-Bukhari 2017.
  4. Sunan Abi Dawud 2357, graded hasan.

Ramadan 1448 is expected to begin on Monday 8 February 2027, with the first taraweeh on the night of Sunday 7 February. If the new moon is not sighted on 6 February, it begins on Tuesday 9 February. Follow your local masjid's announcement.

What time is iftar in Blackburn on the first day of Ramadan?

On Monday 8 February 2027, iftar (Maghrib) in Blackburn is at 5:05 PM and sehri ends at Fajr, 5:44 AM.

How long is the fast in Blackburn in Ramadan 2027?

About 11 h 21 min on the first day, rising to about 13 h 10 min by the end of the month as the days get longer.

When is Eid al-Fitr 2027 in Blackburn?

Eid al-Fitr is expected on Tuesday 9 March 2027 if Ramadan has 29 days, or Wednesday 10 March if it has 30. The Eid prayer is after sunrise, so check your masjid for its time.

Do I stop eating at Fajr or at imsak?

The fast begins at true dawn, the start of Fajr, so eating is allowed until then. Imsak, a few minutes earlier, is a precaution some timetables add. It is good practice to finish a few minutes before Fajr, but eating after imsak and before Fajr does not break the fast.

Does the Hanafi madhhab change sehri or iftar times?

No. All four madhhabs agree the fast runs from true dawn to sunset. The madhhabs differ on the start of Asr, not on sehri or iftar.

Which calculation method does this calendar use?

Muslim World League, with Fajr at 18° and Isha at 17°. Your masjid may add a few minutes for caution, so follow its timetable for congregation.
