Dua for the new moon, on sighting the crescent.

When the Prophet ﷺ saw the new crescent, he said Allahumma ahlilhu alayna bil-yumni wal-iman, was-salamati wal-islam, rabbi wa rabbukallah: O Allah, bring it over us with blessing and faith, safety and Islam. My Lord and your Lord is Allah.1 It is said at the start of every Islamic month, not only Ramadan.

Dua 1: On seeing the crescent

Allāhumma ahlilhu ʿalaynā bil-yumni wal-īmān, was-salāmati wal-islām, rabbī wa rabbukallāh

O Allah, bring it over us with blessing and faith, with safety and Islam. My Lord and your Lord is Allah.

Guide

When and how to say it.

When to say it

Say it when you see the new crescent, usually low in the west just after sunset on the 29th or 30th of the month. The last words, "my Lord and your Lord is Allah", are addressed to the moon: a reminder that it is a creation, not something to be worshipped. A longer version in Sunan al-Darimi begins with Allahu akbar and adds a request for success in what Allah loves, but its chain is weaker.2

The new moon and Ramadan

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Fast when you see it and end the fast when you see it, and if it is hidden from you, complete Shaban as thirty days."3 To see whether the crescent can be seen in your city tonight, use the moon sighting calculator.

Hanafi position

In the main position of the Hanafi school, a sighting confirmed in one place binds Muslims elsewhere once it reaches them reliably, and differences of horizon are not taken into account. Many Hanafi scholars today follow a local or regional sighting committee.
