Guide

The adhkar of morning and evening, when and why.

Allah says: "And exalt Him with praise before the rising of the sun and before its setting."1 The Prophet ﷺ kept a set of adhkar every morning and evening, for protection, forgiveness and gratitude.

When is the time for them?

Hanafi position

The morning adhkar are said from Fajr until the sun has fully risen, and their time stretches until before midday. The evening adhkar are said from after Asr until Maghrib, and many scholars extend them into the night. If you miss the time, say them when you can.

Some scholars place the evening adhkar from Maghrib into the night, based on the word masa covering the start of the night. Either is fine; consistency matters most.

The short set

On busy days, the short set takes about five minutes: Ayat al-Kursi, the three Quls three times each, Sayyid al-Istighfar, the Bismillah dhikr three times and Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi a hundred times. The full set adds the rest of the authentic adhkar shown here.

What the adhkar promise

  • The three Quls, morning and evening: "they will suffice you against everything".2
  • Sayyid al-Istighfar with certainty: whoever dies that day or night enters Paradise.3
  • The Bismillah dhikr three times: nothing will harm you.4
  • Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi a hundred times: no one brings anything better on the Day of Judgement, except someone who said as much or more.5

Questions

Good to know.

When should I read the morning adhkar?

From Fajr until sunrise is best, and until before midday is fine. The evening adhkar are from after Asr until Maghrib, and many extend them into the night.

Can I read the adhkar from my phone?

Yes. Reading them from a screen or book is fine until you memorise them.

What if I miss the morning adhkar?

Say them when you remember. It is better to say them late than to leave them.

Are the morning and evening adhkar the same?

Mostly. A few change their wording, such as "asbahna" (we reached the morning) to "amsayna" (we reached the evening). The counter switches the wording for you.
