Guide

How to pray the Eid prayer, Hanafi method first.

Eid al-Fitr is on 1 Shawwal, the day after Ramadan ends. Eid al-Adha is on 10 Dhul Hijjah, the day after the pilgrims stand at Arafah. Both dates depend on the moon, so the dates here follow the Umm al-Qura calendar and your masjid may announce a day later.

Before the prayer

  • Take a bath (ghusl), wear your best clothes and use perfume.
  • On Eid al-Fitr, eat something before the prayer, ideally an odd number of dates, and pay zakat al-fitr before the prayer.1
  • On Eid al-Adha, it is sunnah to eat nothing until after the prayer, and then to eat from your qurbani.
  • Go to the prayer by one route and return by another.

The two rakahs

Hanafi position

The Eid prayer is wajib on those who must attend Jumuah. It is two rakahs with six extra takbirs: three in the first rakah after the opening dua and before Al-Fatiha, and three in the second rakah after the recitation and before going into ruku. Raise the hands for each extra takbir. The khutbah comes after the prayer.2

Other madhhabs
Shafi'i
A confirmed sunnah. Seven extra takbirs in the first rakah and five in the second, all before the recitation.
Maliki
A confirmed sunnah. Six extra takbirs after the opening takbir in the first rakah, and five in the second, before the recitation.
Hanbali
A communal obligation (fard kifayah). Six extra takbirs in the first rakah and five in the second, before the recitation.

The Eid takbir

Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar, lā ilāha illallāh, wallāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar, wa lillāhil-ḥamd

"Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. There is no god but Allah. Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, and to Allah belongs all praise."

The wording narrated from Ibn Masud, used in the Hanafi school.

Takbir al-Tashriq around Eid al-Adha

Hanafi position

Saying the takbir once, aloud, after every obligatory prayer is wajib from Fajr on the Day of Arafah (9 Dhul Hijjah, Saturday 15 May 2027) to Asr on 13 Dhul Hijjah (Wednesday 19 May 2027). That is 23 prayers.3

Other madhhabs
Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali
The takbir after prayers in these days is a sunnah. The start and end times differ slightly between the schools.

Qurbani on Eid al-Adha

Hanafi position

Qurbani (udhiyah) is wajib on every adult Muslim who is resident, not travelling, and owns wealth at or above the nisab on the days of sacrifice. Its time is from after the Eid prayer on 10 Dhul Hijjah until sunset on the 12th.

Other madhhabs
Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali
Qurbani is a confirmed sunnah (sunnah muakkadah) for those who can afford it, not an obligation. The Maliki and Hanbali schools end its time at sunset on the 12th, like the Hanafi school. The Shafi'i school allows it until sunset on the 13th.
  1. Sahih al-Bukhari 953 (dates before the prayer); Sahih al-Bukhari 1503 (zakat al-fitr before the prayer).
  2. Al-Marghinani, al-Hidayah, Bab Salat al-Idayn.
  3. Al-Marghinani, al-Hidayah, on takbir al-tashriq, following the view of Abu Yusuf and Muhammad, which is the fatwa position. The other madhhabs' positions are summarised from their standard manuals.
