Guide
Zakat al-Fitr, who pays, how much and when.
Zakat al-Fitr, also called sadaqat al-fitr or fitrana, is a small charity paid for every member of a Muslim household at the end of Ramadan. Ibn Abbas said the Messenger of Allah ﷺ made it obligatory "as a purification for the fasting person from idle talk and obscenity, and as food for the poor".1
Who must pay it?
It is wajib on every free Muslim who, on the morning of Eid al-Fitr, owns wealth at the nisab level beyond their basic needs, even if they have not held it for a year and it is not trade wealth. They pay for themselves and for their children who have not reached puberty. A husband is not obliged to pay for his wife or adult children, though he may with their permission.2
Other madhhabs
- Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali
- It is obligatory on anyone who has more than a day and night's food for themselves and their dependents on Eid. The head of the household pays for everyone he must support, including his wife.
How much? Half a sa or one sa
Half a sa of wheat or wheat flour, or one sa of dates, barley or raisins, for each person. In today's weights that is about 1.75 kg of wheat or flour, or 3.5 kg of dates, barley or raisins, rounded up for caution. Paying the cash value is allowed, and is often better for the poor.3
Other madhhabs
- Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali
- One sa (roughly 2.5 kg) of the local staple food, such as rice, wheat or dates, for each person. It should be given as food. Paying cash instead is not accepted in these schools, though some contemporary scholars allow it where food does not help the poor.
Many communities in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh announce four amounts, one for each food: wheat, barley, dates and raisins. Those who can afford it are encouraged to pay by the more expensive foods.
When to pay
It becomes due at dawn on the day of Eid al-Fitr, expected to be Tuesday 9 or Wednesday 10 March 2027. It is sunnah to pay it before the Eid prayer, so the poor can share in Eid.4 In the Hanafi school it may be paid earlier, during Ramadan or even before. If you miss the Eid deadline it is still owed, so pay it as soon as you can.
Who can receive it?
The same people who can receive zakat: Muslims who are poor or needy. It should not be given to your own parents, grandparents, children, grandchildren or spouse.
Zakat al-Fitr and zakat on wealth
They are different. Zakat on wealth is 2.5% of savings held for a lunar year. Zakat al-Fitr is a fixed small amount per person, paid once a year at Eid al-Fitr. Use the zakat calculator for zakat on wealth.
