Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. A man keeps telling the truth until he becomes a truthful one. Lying leads to wickedness, and wickedness leads to the Fire. A man keeps lying until he is written down with Allah as a liar.

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas'ud · Sahih al-Bukhari 6094; Sahih Muslim 2607 · Sahih (agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim)

The signs of a hypocrite are three: when he speaks, he lies; when he promises, he breaks it; and when he is trusted, he betrays.

Narrated by Abu Hurayrah · Sahih al-Bukhari 33; Sahih Muslim 59 · Sahih (agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim)

Leave what makes you doubt for what does not make you doubt. Truthfulness is peace of mind, and lying is doubt.

Narrated by al-Hasan ibn Ali · Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2518 · Graded sahih by al-Albani

I guarantee a house on the edge of Paradise for whoever gives up arguing even when he is right, a house in the middle of Paradise for whoever gives up lying even when he is joking, and a house in the highest part of Paradise for whoever makes his character good.

Narrated by Abu Umamah · Sunan Abi Dawud 4800 · Graded hasan by al-Albani

Woe to the one who speaks and lies to make people laugh. Woe to him, woe to him.

Narrated by Mu'awiyah ibn Haydah · Sunan Abi Dawud 4990; Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2315 · Graded hasan by al-Albani

(My mother called me and said: Come here, I will give you something. The Prophet ﷺ asked her:) What did you mean to give him? (She said: A date. He said:) If you had not given him anything, a lie would have been written against you.

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Amir · Sunan Abi Dawud 4991 · Graded hasan by al-Albani

It is enough of a sin for a person to pass on everything he hears.

Sahih Muslim has the same hadith in its introduction, with the words "enough of a lie".

Narrated by Abu Hurayrah · Sunan Abi Dawud 4992 · Graded sahih by al-Albani

Whoever deliberately tells a lie about me, let him take his seat in the Fire.

This is why it matters to check a hadith before sharing it. It is one of the most widely narrated hadith of all.

Narrated by Anas ibn Malik · Sahih al-Bukhari 108 · Sahih

Shall I not tell you the greatest of the major sins? ... Associating partners with Allah and disobeying parents ... And beware of false speech. (He was reclining, then sat up and kept repeating it.)

Narrated by Abu Bakrah · Sahih al-Bukhari 2654; Sahih Muslim 87 · Sahih (agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim)

The buyer and the seller may cancel the sale until they part. If they tell the truth and make everything clear, their sale is blessed for them. If they hide things and lie, the blessing of their sale is wiped out.

Narrated by Hakim ibn Hizam · Sahih al-Bukhari 2079; Sahih Muslim 1532 · Sahih (agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim)

There are three whom Allah will not speak to on the Day of Resurrection, nor look at, nor purify, and they will have a painful punishment ... the one who lets his lower garment trail, the one who reminds people of what he gave them, and the one who sells his goods with a false oath.

The scholars explain the first as dragging the garment out of pride.

Narrated by Abu Dharr · Sahih Muslim 106 · Sahih

The one who makes peace between people, passing on good or saying good, is not a liar.

Narrated by Umm Kulthum bint Uqbah · Sahih al-Bukhari 2692; Sahih Muslim 2605 · Sahih (agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim)

Weak sayings people share

These are often posted as hadith, but the hadith critics did not accept them as the Prophet's ﷺ words, or they are not found in the hadith books at all. Do not pass them on as hadith.

  • Weak

"Can a believer be a coward? Yes. Can a believer be a miser? Yes. Can a believer be a liar? No."

Where: Muwatta Malik, from Safwan ibn Sulaym. Grade: weak: the chain is broken (mursal). The lesson, that lying does not sit with faith, is true from the sound hadith on this page.

"It is a great betrayal to tell your brother something he believes from you while you are lying to him."

Guide

What these hadith say, and how to live by them

Short answer: the best known hadith about lying is "Truthfulness leads to righteousness and righteousness leads to Paradise ... lying leads to wickedness and wickedness leads to the Fire" (Sahih al-Bukhari 6094, Sahih Muslim 2607). The Prophet ﷺ also named lying as the first sign of a hypocrite (Sahih al-Bukhari 33), warned against lying to make people laugh (Sunan Abi Dawud 4990), and promised a house in Paradise to whoever gives up lying even in jest (Sunan Abi Dawud 4800).

Small lies count

These hadith close the doors people leave open. A joke is not an excuse (Abu Dawud 4800, 4990). A promise to a child is a promise (Abu Dawud 4991). Passing on every rumour is enough to make you a liar (Abu Dawud 4992). And a sale with a hidden fault or a false oath loses its blessing (Bukhari 2079). The Prophet ﷺ himself joked, but he said he only ever spoke the truth when he did.

When is it allowed to lie?

The hadith of Umm Kulthum says the peacemaker who passes on only good is not a liar (Bukhari 2692). In Sahih Muslim, the narrator Ibn Shihab adds that he heard no permission for what people call lying except in three cases: war, making peace between people, and what a husband and wife say to each other. The scholars differ on how far this goes. A group, as al-Nawawi reports, allows an outright untruth in these three cases. Others, among them al-Tabari, say what is meant is indirect speech (tawriyah) that the speaker does not intend as false, such as praising a meal more warmly than you felt. All agree it never covers lying that takes someone's right, hides a fault in a sale, or deceives a spouse in what harms them.

How to become truthful

  • Make truth a habit in small things: the hadith says a person "keeps telling the truth" until he is written as truthful.
  • Check before you share, especially anything said about the Prophet ﷺ. This page lists weak sayings at the end for that reason.
  • Leave what makes you doubt. If you have to think hard about whether something is a lie, it probably is.

Questions

Good to know

What does the hadith say about lying?

That lying leads to wickedness and wickedness to the Fire, and that a person keeps lying until he is written with Allah as a liar (Sahih al-Bukhari 6094, Sahih Muslim 2607). Lying is also the first sign of a hypocrite (Sahih al-Bukhari 33).

Is lying as a joke allowed in Islam?

No. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Woe to the one who speaks and lies to make people laugh" (Sunan Abi Dawud 4990), and promised a house in the middle of Paradise to whoever gives up lying even when joking (Sunan Abi Dawud 4800).

Are white lies allowed in Islam?

Only in the narrow cases in the hadith of Umm Kulthum: making peace between people, war, and between husband and wife. Many scholars limit even these to indirect speech. A white lie for convenience is still a lie.

What are the signs of a hypocrite in hadith?

"When he speaks, he lies; when he promises, he breaks it; and when he is trusted, he betrays" (Sahih al-Bukhari 33, Sahih Muslim 59). Another version adds: when he argues, he is unjust.

Is it a sin to lie to children?

Yes. In Sunan Abi Dawud 4991 the Prophet ﷺ told a mother that if she called her son with a promise and gave him nothing, a lie would be written against her. Al-Albani graded it hasan.
