Our Lord, blessed and exalted is He, descends every night to the lowest heaven when the last third of the night remains, and says: Who is calling on Me, so that I may answer him? Who is asking of Me, so that I may give him? Who is asking My forgiveness, so that I may forgive him?

Narrated by Abu Hurayrah · Sahih al-Bukhari 1145; Sahih Muslim 758 · Sahih (agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim)

The best fasting after Ramadan is the month of Allah, Muharram, and the best prayer after the obligatory prayer is the prayer at night.

Narrated by Abu Hurayrah · Sahih Muslim 1163 · Sahih

The Prophet ﷺ used to stand in prayer at night until his feet were cracked. Aishah said: Why do you do this, O Messenger of Allah, when Allah has forgiven your past and future sins? He said: Should I not love to be a grateful servant?

Narrated by Aishah · Sahih al-Bukhari 4837; Sahih Muslim 2820 · Sahih (agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim)

What a fine man Abdullah is, if only he would pray at night.

After that, Ibn Umar slept only a little of the night.

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar · Sahih al-Bukhari 1122; Sahih Muslim 2479 · Sahih (agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim)

Satan ties three knots at the back of the head of any of you when he sleeps, striking each knot with the words: you have a long night, so sleep. If he wakes and remembers Allah, one knot comes undone. If he makes wudu, another comes undone. If he prays, the last comes undone, and he starts the morning lively and in good spirits. Otherwise he starts it in a bad mood and lazy.

Narrated by Abu Hurayrah · Sahih al-Bukhari 1142; Sahih Muslim 776 · Sahih (agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim)

O people, spread the greeting of peace, feed others, and pray while people are asleep, and you will enter Paradise in peace.

Among the first words Abdullah ibn Salam heard from the Prophet ﷺ when he arrived in Madinah.

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Salam · Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2485; Sunan Ibn Majah 1334 · Graded sahih by al-Albani

May Allah have mercy on a man who gets up at night and prays, and wakes his wife; if she refuses, he sprinkles water on her face. May Allah have mercy on a woman who gets up at night and prays, and wakes her husband; if he refuses, she sprinkles water on his face.

Whoever goes to bed intending to get up and pray at night, and sleep overcomes him until morning, has what he intended written for him, and his sleep is a charity to him from his Lord, Mighty and Majestic.

Narrated by Abu ad-Darda · Sunan an-Nasa'i 1787 · Graded sahih by al-Albani

The prayer most beloved to Allah is the prayer of Dawud, peace be upon him, and the fasting most beloved to Allah is the fasting of Dawud. He used to sleep half the night, pray a third of it and sleep a sixth of it, and he fasted one day and not the next.

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Amr · Sahih al-Bukhari 1131; Sahih Muslim 1159 · Sahih (agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim)

The night prayer is two rakat at a time. When one of you fears the dawn is coming, let him pray one rakah to make what he has prayed odd.

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar · Sahih al-Bukhari 990; Sahih Muslim 749 · Sahih (agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim)

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not pray more than eleven rakat, in Ramadan or outside it. He would pray four, and do not ask how beautiful and long they were, then four more, and do not ask how beautiful and long they were, then three.

Narrated by Aishah · Sahih al-Bukhari 1147; Sahih Muslim 738 · Sahih (agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim)

Weak sayings people share

These are often posted as hadith, but the hadith critics did not accept them as the Prophet's ﷺ words, or they are not found in the hadith books at all. Do not pass them on as hadith.

  • Weak

"Whoever prays a lot at night, his face becomes beautiful in the day."

Where: Sunan Ibn Majah 1333. Grade: graded weak (da'if) by al-Albani; several critics said it is not a hadith but a man's words mistakenly attached to a chain.

  • Weak

"Hold to the night prayer, for it was the way of the righteous before you. It brings you closer to Allah, keeps you from sin, wipes out bad deeds and drives illness from the body."

Where: Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3549. Grade: this chain is graded weak (da'if) by al-Albani; a shorter wording without the part about illness is reported through other chains and was accepted by some scholars.

Guide

What these hadith say, and how to live by them

Short answer: the most important hadith about tahajjud is that Allah descends to the lowest heaven in the last third of every night and asks who is calling on Him, asking of Him and seeking His forgiveness (Sahih al-Bukhari 1145, Sahih Muslim 758). The Prophet ﷺ also called the night prayer the best prayer after the obligatory ones (Sahih Muslim 1163), prayed it until his feet cracked out of gratitude (Sahih al-Bukhari 4837), and usually prayed eleven rakat including witr (Sahih al-Bukhari 1147).

What these hadith teach

  • The last third is the best time. Any prayer after Isha and before Fajr counts as night prayer, but the last third is when Allah's call goes out.
  • Pray in twos. The night prayer is two rakat at a time, ending with witr.
  • There is no fixed number. Eight rakat plus three of witr was the Prophet's ﷺ usual way, and two rakat is enough to have prayed tahajjud.
  • Intend it before you sleep. If you mean to wake and cannot, you still get the reward (an-Nasa'i 1787).
  • Help your family. The Prophet ﷺ prayed for mercy on a husband and wife who wake each other for it.

Witr, Hanafi first

The hadith of Ibn Umar ends the night prayer with an odd number. The schools differ on witr itself:

Hanafi position

Witr is wajib, a step below fard. It is three rakat with one salam at the end, with dua qunoot recited in the third rakah before ruku. Tahajjud itself is a sunnah, and the Hanafi books recommend up to eight rakat before witr.

Other madhhabs
Shafi'i and Hanbali
Witr is a stressed sunnah, not wajib. It can be a single rakah, and up to eleven; three are often prayed as two with a salam, then one.
Maliki
Witr is a stressed sunnah, prayed as one rakah after an even pair with a salam between them.

Questions

Good to know

What is the main hadith about tahajjud?

Our Lord descends every night to the lowest heaven in the last third of the night and says: Who is calling on Me, that I may answer? Who is asking, that I may give? Who seeks forgiveness, that I may forgive? (Sahih al-Bukhari 1145, Sahih Muslim 758).

How many rakat of tahajjud did the Prophet ﷺ pray?

Aishah said he did not pray more than eleven rakat, in Ramadan or outside it (Sahih al-Bukhari 1147): usually eight of night prayer and three of witr. Other reports mention thirteen.

Is tahajjud sunnah or wajib?

Tahajjud is a sunnah in all four schools. Witr is wajib in the Hanafi school and a stressed sunnah in the other three.

What if I intend to pray tahajjud but oversleep?

You are rewarded for your intention, and your sleep is a charity from Allah to you (Sunan an-Nasa'i 1787, graded sahih by al-Albani).

Is there a hadith that tahajjud makes your face shine?

The hadith "whoever prays a lot at night, his face becomes beautiful in the day" (Sunan Ibn Majah 1333) is weak.
