Guide

Hajj step by step, Hanafi rules first.

Hajj 2027 (1448 AH) is expected from Friday 14 May 2027 to Wednesday 19 May 2027, by the Umm al-Qura calendar. The Day of Arafah is Saturday 15 May and Eid al-Adha is Sunday 16 May. Saudi Arabia confirms the dates after sighting the Dhul Hijjah crescent around Thursday 6 May.

Feehi Aayaatum baiyinaatum Maqaamu Ibraaheema wa man dakhalahoo kaana aaminaa; wa lillaahi 'alan naasi Hijjul Baiti manis tataa'a ilaihi sabeelaa; wa man kafara fa innal laaha ghaniyyun 'anil 'aalameen

"In it are clear signs [such as] the standing place of Abraham. And whoever enters it shall be safe. And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House - for whoever is able to find thereto a way. But whoever disbelieves - then indeed, Allah is free from need of the worlds."

Quran 3:97, translation by Sahih International.

Who must perform Hajj?

Hajj is fard once in a lifetime on every adult, sane Muslim who has the health and the money for the journey and for their family's needs while they are away, and a safe route. In the Hanafi school a woman also needs a mahram (or her husband) for the journey.

The three kinds of Hajj

  • Tamattu: Umrah in the Hajj months, leave ihram, then a new ihram for Hajj on the 8th. Most pilgrims from the US, UK and Canada do this. A sacrifice is wajib.
  • Qiran: Umrah and Hajj in one ihram, with a sacrifice.
  • Ifrad: Hajj alone, with no sacrifice required.
Hanafi position

Qiran is the best, then tamattu, then ifrad. The pillars are standing at Arafah and Tawaf al-Ziyarah (Ifadah), with ihram as a condition. The wajib acts include staying at Muzdalifah after Fajr on the 10th, sai, stoning the jamarat, shaving or trimming, the sacrifice for tamattu and qiran, and the farewell tawaf for those who live outside the miqat. Leaving a wajib act needs a dam (a sheep sacrificed in the Haram).1

Other madhhabs
Shafi'i
Ifrad is best. The pillars are ihram, Arafah, tawaf, sai, and shaving or trimming, done in order.
Maliki
Ifrad is best. The pillars are ihram, Arafah, tawaf and sai.
Hanbali
Tamattu is best. The pillars are ihram, Arafah, tawaf and sai.

The days of Hajj in short

  1. Before the 8th: arrive, do your Umrah if you are doing tamattu (see the Umrah guide), and rest.
  2. 8th, Friday 14 May: ihram and the intention for Hajj, then Mina.
  3. 9th, Saturday 15 May: Arafah from midday to sunset, the heart of Hajj. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Hajj is Arafah."2 Then Maghrib and Isha together at Muzdalifah, and the night there.
  4. 10th, Sunday 16 May: after Fajr at Muzdalifah, go to Mina. Stone Jamrat al-Aqabah with seven pebbles, then the sacrifice, then shave or trim. In the Hanafi school this order is wajib for those doing qiran or tamattu. Tawaf al-Ifadah can be done from the 10th until sunset on the 12th.
  5. 11th and 12th: stone all three jamarat after midday each day. You may leave Mina on the 12th.
  6. 13th, Wednesday 19 May: stone again if you stayed, then the farewell tawaf before going home.

Planning Hajj 2027 from the US, UK or Canada

  • Pilgrims from Europe, the Americas and Australia book through Saudi Arabia's official Nusuk Hajj platform. Registration usually opens months before Hajj, so check it early and use a licensed provider.
  • Hajj 2027 falls in mid May, when Makkah and Arafah are very hot. Plan for shade, water and rest.
  • Learn the steps and the duas of the Umrah guide before you travel, since tamattu begins with an Umrah.

If you are not going this year

Fast the Day of Arafah, worship in the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah, and give your qurbani on Eid al-Adha.

  1. Al-Marghinani, al-Hidayah, Kitab al-Hajj; Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar. The other madhhabs' positions are summarised from their standard manuals.
  2. Sunan Abi Dawud 1949; Jami at-Tirmidhi 889, graded sahih.
