How to test your hifz, and keep it
This hifz test works like a teacher's spot check. You choose what you have memorised, the tool picks an ayah and shows only its first words, and you recite the rest. Then you reveal the ayah and mark yourself. Testing in a random order is harder than reciting from the start, and that is the point: it shows which ayat you really know and which you only know as part of a run.
How the repetition works
Each ayah you test has a level, saved on this device. A right answer moves it up a level; almost keeps it low; wrong sends it back to the start. When you begin a round with "Weakest first", ayat at low levels, ayat you have not seen for a while and ayat you have never tested are picked first, so your time goes where it is needed. Within a round, an ayah you got wrong comes back three cards later, and one you almost knew comes back a little after that. This is a simple form of spaced repetition, the method behind flashcard apps.
Right, almost or wrong?
- Right: you recited the whole ayah without help and without a mistake in a letter or vowel.
- Almost: you needed a hint word, paused for long, or made a small slip you corrected yourself.
- Wrong: you could not carry on, or you mixed it up with another ayah.
Mixing up similar ayat (mutashabihat) is the most common hifz problem. When it happens, open the ayah in the surah page and read the two side by side.
A routine that works
- New lesson (sabaq): memorise your new ayat with the recitation player on repeat.
- Recent revision (sabqi): test the last few days' ayat here, ten a day.
- Old revision (manzil): test a whole juz once a week, "Weakest first".

Starting with Juz 30
Most children and adults begin with Juz 30, from Surah An-Naba to An-Nas, because its surahs are short and are recited in every prayer. The juz list here starts with it. Surah Al-Mulk, recited before sleep, is a good next step.

How do I test my Quran memorization by myself?
Pick a surah here, look at the first words of each ayah, recite the rest without looking, then reveal and mark it. Test in random order, not only from the start.
How many words does the hifz test show?
Two by default. You can choose one, two or three, and press H for one more word at any time. A very short ayah shows fewer, so the answer is never given away.
Is my progress saved?
Yes, in this browser on this device. Clearing your browser data removes it. Nothing is sent to us.
Which surahs should I memorise first?
Most people start with Al-Fatiha and the short surahs of Juz 30, then Ayatul Kursi and Surah Al-Mulk.
Can it check my tajweed?
No. It checks your memory. Recite to a teacher to check your tajweed, and use the tajweed rules page to learn them.
