Halal and haram food, meat, ingredients, alcohol and smoking. 29 answers, Hanafi first, with the Quran and hadith behind each one.
- What makes meat halal (zabiha)?Meat is halal when the animal is a halal species, a sane Muslim (or a believing Jew or Christian) cuts its throat with a sharp blade while it is alive, and Allah's name is said over it. In the Hanafi school, leaving out Allah's name on purpose makes the meat haram. The Shafi'i school treats the bismillah as a sunnah.
- Is machine slaughtered chicken halal? In the Hanafi fatwa position of Deobandi institutions, chicken cut by a rotating machine blade is not halal, because no person says Allah's name over each bird as it is cut. Chicken is halal when Muslims cut each bird by hand, saying bismillah. Some other scholars accept one bismillah said when the machine is switched on.
- Do you have to say bismillah when slaughtering?Yes, in the Hanafi school saying Allah's name at slaughter is a condition. If the slaughterer leaves it out on purpose, the meat is haram; if he simply forgets, the meat is halal. The Maliki and Hanbali schools agree, while the Shafi'i school treats it as a sunnah.
- Is meat slaughtered by Christians and Jews halal? In principle, yes: the Quran makes the food of the People of the Book lawful. In the Hanafi school this holds when a believing Jew or Christian cuts the throat and says Allah's name. Deobandi institutions hold that ordinary supermarket meat in the West does not meet these conditions and is not halal. Some contemporary scholars are more lenient.
- Is kosher meat halal? Not in the Hanafi fatwa position of Deobandi institutions. Kosher slaughter is done by hand, but the blessing is usually said once for a series of animals rather than over each one, and certification follows Jewish law, not Islamic law. Some scholars, especially in the Shafi'i school, accept kosher meat. Kosher non-meat products can contain wine or alcohol.
- Can Muslims eat at McDonald's and other fast food chains? You may eat there, but the meat and chicken are halal only if that branch serves certified zabiha meat, which most Western branches do not. Fries and other vegetarian items are halal only if they have no animal or alcohol ingredients and are not fried in oil shared with non-halal meat. AmalKit does not certify brands: check each branch and country.
- What happens if a Muslim eats pork?Pork is haram in all four schools. If you ate it by mistake or without knowing, there is no sin and no expiation: spit out what is left, rinse your mouth and move on. If you ate it knowingly, it is a major sin that needs sincere tawbah (repentance), but you are still a Muslim and your prayers remain valid.
- Is tuna halal?Yes. Tuna, salmon and all true fish are halal in all four schools, and fish does not need to be slaughtered or have bismillah said over it. For canned or flavoured tuna, check that the oil, broth or seasoning has no non-halal additives.
- Is shrimp halal in the Hanafi madhhab?Hanafi scholars differ. The Hanafi school allows only fish from the sea, and the question is whether shrimp counts as fish. Many Hanafi muftis allow shrimp and prawns because they were counted as a kind of fish in Arabic usage, while others hold them makruh because zoologists do not class them as fish. The other three schools allow shrimp.
- Are crab and lobster halal? Not in the Hanafi school, which allows only fish from the sea, so crab, lobster, mussels, oysters, clams, squid and octopus are makruh tahrimi (treated as forbidden). The Maliki and Hanbali schools allow them, and the Shafi'i school allows most of them. Followers of those schools may eat them, and Hanafis should not criticise them.
- Is sushi halal?Sushi can be halal. Raw fish is halal in all four schools, but check three things: shellfish (not eaten in the Hanafi school, with shrimp disputed), mirin or sake in the rice or sauces (rice wines, which are haram), and any meat toppings. Plain rice vinegar, nori, wasabi and fish are fine.
- Is gelatin halal?Gelatin is halal when it comes from fish or from a halal animal slaughtered by zabiha. In the Hanafi fatwa position of Deobandi institutions, gelatin from pigs or from non-zabiha animals is not halal, because its making does not fully change the substance. Some scholars, especially in the Maliki school, hold that processing transforms it and allow it.
- Is rennet in cheese halal?Cheese made with microbial, vegetable or halal-animal rennet is halal. Cheese made with rennet from a non-zabiha calf is allowed in the Hanafi school on the view of Imam Abu Hanifa, which many Hanafi muftis follow, though avoiding it is better when you can. Pig rennet is haram, and the other three schools treat non-zabiha animal rennet as impure.
- Is vanilla extract haram? In the Hanafi view taught by Mufti Taqi Usmani and many Deobandi muftis, vanilla extract used in small amounts in cooking is permissible, because its alcohol is usually not from grapes or dates, it is used as a solvent, not drunk, and the food cannot intoxicate. Many scholars of the other schools advise avoiding it. Alcohol-free vanilla avoids the question.
- Is food cooked with wine or beer halal? No. Wine and beer are intoxicating drinks, and food made with them is haram even if some alcohol cooks off, because the drink itself is forbidden and not all of the alcohol leaves. This includes beer-battered fish, wine sauces, and tiramisu or desserts made with marsala, rum or liqueur. The four schools agree.
- Is non-alcoholic beer halal? Most Hanafi muftis, including the Deobandi institutions, advise against it. Drinks sold as non-alcoholic in the US can contain up to 0.5 percent alcohol, many are made by brewing real beer and removing the alcohol, and drinking them imitates beer drinkers. A malt drink that never contained alcohol is permissible, but many still advise avoiding it.
- Are soy sauce and gochujang halal?Yes, in principle. Brewed soy sauce and gochujang contain a little alcohol that forms in fermentation, or a little added as a preservative. In the Hanafi view of Mufti Taqi Usmani and many Deobandi muftis this does not make them haram, since the amount cannot intoxicate and does not come from grapes or dates. Avoid sauces made with mirin, sake or rice wine.
- Is kombucha halal?Regular shop kombucha is generally halal. Its small trace of alcohol forms naturally in fermentation, and drinks sold as non-alcoholic kombucha in the US must stay under 0.5 percent, an amount that cannot intoxicate however much you drink. Hard kombucha, brewed as an alcoholic drink, is haram.
- Is balsamic vinegar halal?Yes. Vinegar is halal, including balsamic vinegar and, in the Hanafi school, wine vinegar, because wine that has fully turned into vinegar is a new, pure substance. The Shafi'i and Hanbali schools accept wine vinegar only when the wine turned into vinegar by itself.
- Are E-numbers and food additives halal? Most are. An E-number is just a code for an additive, and most additives come from plants, minerals, microbes or synthesis, so they are halal. A few can come from animals or insects, such as gelatin (E441), glycerol (E422), mono- and diglycerides (E471), carmine (E120) and L-cysteine (E920), and these need a halal source. Xanthan gum and carrageenan are halal.
- Is carmine halal? Not in the Hanafi school. Carmine (E120, cochineal) is a red colour made from crushed insects, and the Hanafi school forbids eating insects apart from locusts. The Maliki school allows it. Carmine is not impure in the Hanafi school, so lipstick or cosmetics containing it do not affect your wudu or prayer.
- Are energy drinks and coffee halal?Yes. Coffee, tea and caffeine are halal in all four schools, and energy drinks are permitted in principle. They become a problem only if a drink contains a haram ingredient, or if you drink so much that it harms your health, which Islam forbids. The taurine in energy drinks is normally made synthetically, not from animals.
- Is smoking haram in Islam? In the Hanafi fatwa position given by Deobandi institutions, smoking is makruh tahrimi (close to haram and sinful), because of its proven harm, the waste of money and the bad smell. Many other scholars and major fatwa bodies call it haram outright. Vaping, shisha and nicotine pouches fall under the same ruling.
- Is weed haram?Yes. Cannabis (weed, marijuana, hashish) is haram in all four schools because it clouds the mind like alcohol, and being legal where you live does not change that. Kratom is haram in amounts that intoxicate or create dependency. Medicines from cannabis, and CBD with no intoxicating effect, are a separate question to ask a mufti and your doctor.
- Is it haram to eat with your left hand?Eating and drinking with the left hand without a reason is makruh in the Hanafi school, and many Hanafi muftis class it as makruh tahrimi, since the Prophet ﷺ commanded the right hand and said Satan eats with his left. With an excuse, such as an injured right hand, there is no blame. Using the left hand to help is fine.
- Is it haram to eat or drink while standing? No, it is not haram. Sitting to eat and drink is the sunnah, and doing so standing without need is makruh tanzihi (disliked, not sinful) in the Hanafi school. The Prophet ﷺ is reported both to have discouraged drinking while standing and to have drunk Zamzam standing, so the scholars read the first as guidance toward the better way.
- Is horse meat halal?Yes, with some dislike in the Hanafi school. Imam Abu Hanifa disliked eating horse, and the Deobandi fatwa position treats it as halal but makruh tanzihi (mildly disliked); his two students held it fully halal. The Shafi'i and Hanbali schools allow it, and the well-known Maliki position forbids it. Donkey and mule meat are haram.
- Is rabbit halal?Yes. Rabbit and hare are halal in all four schools when slaughtered by zabiha or lawfully hunted. Companions caught a rabbit, slaughtered it and sent part of it to the Prophet ﷺ, who accepted it.
- Is meat from stunned animals halal? If the animal was still alive when its throat was cut correctly with bismillah, the meat is halal, though painful stunning is disliked. If the stun killed it before the cut, it is carrion and haram, since the Quran forbids animals killed by a violent blow. Because some stunning methods kill animals first, Deobandi institutions advise meat from unstunned slaughter.
