Guide

Making up missed prayers, the Hanafi way.

Missed obligatory prayers remain a debt until they are made up. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever forgets a prayer, let him pray it when he remembers it; there is no expiation for it except that."1 The scholars of the four schools agree that this includes prayers missed on purpose.

Hanafi position

Every missed fard prayer, and witr, which is wajib, must be made up: six prayers for each day. When you do not know the exact number, estimate on the side of caution. Make the intention for, for example, the first Fajr you owe or the last one, and keep going in order. Qada prayers may be prayed at any time except sunrise, the sun's zenith and sunset.2

Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali
The five fard prayers are made up. Witr is a confirmed sunnah, so it is not owed as qada. A woman's period in the Shafi'i school can last up to 15 days.

How the count works

  1. Days from puberty until you began praying regularly, plus any gaps after that.
  2. Women: the usual length of the period is taken off for each month, and postnatal bleeding for each birth.
  3. Each day is multiplied by six prayers (Hanafi, with witr) or five.
  4. Prayers you have already made up are taken off.

Making up a large number

Many scholars advise praying one qada with each of the day's prayers, or more if you can. Six a day clears a year of missed prayers in a year, and the tracker above lets you tick them off. You may also pray qada instead of non-emphasised sunnah prayers, but keep the sunnah of Fajr and the emphasised sunnahs.

Missed fasts

Missed Ramadan fasts are made up one day for one day, at any time except the two Eids and the days of tashriq. If a fast was broken deliberately, see the fidya and kaffarah calculator.

Questions

Good to know.

How do I calculate my qada prayers?

Count the days from puberty to when you began praying regularly, add any gaps, take off menstruation days for women, and multiply by six (Hanafi) or five. The calculator does this for you.

Do I have to make up witr?

In the Hanafi school, yes, because witr is wajib. In the other schools it is not owed.

What intention do I make for qada?

For example: "I intend to pray the first Fajr that I owe." Keep making it for the first or the last one owed, so the count stays clear.

Can I pray qada at any time?

Yes, except at sunrise, when the sun is at its highest and at sunset.
