Guide
Qada, fidya and kaffarah, what each one is.
Three different things can be owed for a Ramadan fast, and they are often confused. Qada is making up the fast on another day. Fidya is feeding a poor person for each fast, for someone who cannot fast at all. Kaffarah is the heavy expiation for breaking a Ramadan fast on purpose.
Qada only
Most missed fasts need only a make-up day: illness you will recover from, travel, menstruation and postnatal bleeding. Allah says: "Whoever among you is ill or on a journey, then an equal number of other days."1 Eating or drinking by genuine mistake does not break the fast at all, so nothing is owed.
Fidya
Fidya is for someone who cannot fast and has no hope of being able to, such as the very elderly or the chronically ill. Allah says: "And upon those who are able to fast, but with hardship, a ransom of feeding a poor person."2 In the Hanafi school, the fidya for each day is the same as one zakat al-fitr: half a sa of wheat or its value. If someone who paid fidya later recovers, they must make up the fasts.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
A pregnant or breastfeeding woman who fears for herself or her baby may leave the fast and makes up the days later. No fidya is due.
Other madhhabs
- Shafi'i, Hanbali
- If she feared only for the baby, she makes up the days and also pays one fidya per day. If she feared for herself, she makes up the days only.
- Maliki
- A pregnant woman makes up the days only. A breastfeeding woman who feared for the baby makes up the days and pays fidya.
Kaffarah
Kaffarah is due for deliberately eating, drinking or having intercourse during a Ramadan fast, without an excuse, after making the intention at night. It is fasting 60 days in a row. Only someone who cannot fast them, through illness or old age, may instead feed 60 poor people, each the amount of one fitrana. If a day in the 60 is missed, the count starts again, except for a woman's period. The broken day is also made up. Several fasts broken in the same Ramadan need one kaffarah, if it was not paid in between.3
Other madhhabs
- Shafi'i, Hanbali
- Kaffarah is due only for intercourse. Deliberate eating or drinking needs a make-up fast and sincere repentance, but no kaffarah. The order is the same: 60 days of fasting, then feeding 60 people if unable.
- Maliki
- Kaffarah is due for deliberate eating, drinking and intercourse. The person may choose between fasting 60 days and feeding 60 people, and feeding is preferred.
Delaying make-up fasts
If you did not make up last year's fasts before the next Ramadan, you still make them up afterwards. No extra fidya is due for the delay.
Other madhhabs
- Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali
- If the delay was without an excuse, a fidya is due for each day as well as the make-up fast.

Questions
Good to know.
How much is fidya per day?
In the Hanafi school, the same as one zakat al-fitr: the value of about 1.75 kg of wheat or flour, or 3.5 kg of dates or barley. Masjids usually announce the amount each Ramadan.
How much is kaffarah for breaking a fast?
Kaffarah is 60 days of fasting in a row. Only if you cannot fast may you feed 60 poor people, which is 60 times the fitrana amount. You also make up the broken day.
Is kaffarah due for eating on purpose?
In the Hanafi and Maliki schools, yes. In the Shafi'i and Hanbali schools, kaffarah is due only for intercourse, and eating on purpose needs a make-up fast and repentance.
Can I pay fidya instead of making up fasts?
Only if you cannot fast and have no hope of being able to, such as old age or a lasting illness. Otherwise you must make the fasts up.
Do I pay fidya for fasts missed during my period?
No. Fasts missed because of menstruation or postnatal bleeding are made up later, with no fidya.
Can I pay fidya in advance?
In the Hanafi school, someone with no hope of recovery may pay the fidya for the whole of Ramadan at its start, or at the end.
