Quran 40:60, call upon Me, I will respond.

Surah Ghafir, ayah 60: "And your Lord says, "Call upon Me; I will respond to you." Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell [rendered] contemptible." Read it in Arabic with transliteration and the Sahih International translation, with the ayah before and after it, and listen to it recited.

40:59Before

Innas Saa'ata la aatiyatul laa raiba feehaa wa laakinna aksaran naasi laa yu'minoon

Indeed, the Hour is coming - no doubt about it - but most of the people do not believe.

40:60This ayah

Wa qaala Rabbukumud 'ooneee astajib lakum; innal lazeena yastakbiroona an 'ibaadatee sa yadkhuloona jahannama daakhireen

And your Lord says, "Call upon Me; I will respond to you." Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell [rendered] contemptible.

40:61After

Allaahul lazee ja'ala lakumul laila litqaskunoo feehi wannahaara mubsiraa; innal laaha lazoo fadlin 'alan naasi wa laakinna aksaran naasi laa yashkuroon

It is Allah who made for you the night that you may rest therein and the day giving sight. Indeed, Allah is full of bounty to the people, but most of the people are not grateful.

Meaning and lessons

What Quran 40:60 means, in brief.

Your Lord says: call upon Me, and I will respond to you. Those who are too proud to worship Me will enter Hell humiliated. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Dua is worship," and then recited this ayah (Sunan Abi Dawud 1479; Jami at-Tirmidhi 2969, graded sahih).

Ibn Kathir explains that this is a generous invitation and a promise of answer, and that the ayah calls the refusal to make dua a form of arrogance toward worship.

Ibn Kathir also cites: "Whoever does not ask Allah, He is angry with him" (Jami at-Tirmidhi, graded hasan). People tire of being asked, but Allah loves to be asked. So make dua for big and small things, in any language and at any time, and look for the times when it is more likely to be answered, such as in sujud and the last third of the night.

Summarised in our own words from Tafsir Ibn Kathir, on Quran 40:60. Translation of the ayah: Sahih International.
