Quran 60:8, be kind and just

Surah Al-Mumtahanah, ayah 8: "Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting..." Read it in Arabic with transliteration and the Sahih International translation, with the ayah before and after it, and listen to it recited.

60:7Before

Asal laahu any yaj'ala bainakum wa bainal lazeena 'aadaitum minhum mawaddah; wallahu qadeer; wallahu ghafoorur raheem

Perhaps Allah will put, between you and those to whom you have been enemies among them, affection. And Allah is competent, and Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

60:8This ayah

Laa yanhaakumul laahu 'anil lazeena lam yuqaatilookum fid deeni wa lam yukhrijookum min diyaarikum an tabarroohum wa tuqsitooo ilaihim; innal laaha yuhibbul muqsiteen

Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.

60:9After

Innamaa yanhaakumul laahu 'anil lazeena qaatalookum fid deeni wa akhrajookum min diyaarikum wa zaaharoo 'alaa ikhraajikum an tawallawhum; wa many yatawallahum faulaaa'ika humuz zaalimoon

Allah only forbids you from those who fight you because of religion and expel you from your homes and aid in your expulsion - [forbids] that you make allies of them. And whoever makes allies of them, then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

Meaning and lessons

What Quran 60:8 means, in brief

Allah does not forbid you from being kind and just to those who have not fought you because of your religion or driven you from your homes; Allah loves the just. Ibn Kathir gives the occasion: Asma bint Abi Bakr's mother, who was not Muslim, came to visit her, and Asma asked the Prophet ﷺ whether she should keep ties with her. He said: "Yes, keep ties with your mother" (Sahih al-Bukhari 2620; Sahih Muslim 1003).

The next ayah (60:9) makes the distinction: what is forbidden is allying with those who fought the believers for their faith and expelled them.

Summarised in our own words from Tafsir Ibn Kathir, on Quran 60:8. Translation of the ayah: Sahih International.

Lessons from this ayah

  • Kindness to non-Muslim neighbours, relatives and colleagues is encouraged.
