    Guide

How to use a salah tracker, and keep the five prayers

A salah tracker keeps the five daily prayers in view: Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib and Isha, plus witr. Tick each prayer as on time, late, made up (qada) or missed, and it counts your streak, shows the month at a glance and keeps a total of prayers you still owe. Kids mode turns each prayer into a star with a reward goal, and every month prints as a one-page chart.

    Why the five prayers matter

Allah says the prayer is a duty at fixed times:

    Surah An-Nisa, 4:103Read in context

Fa izaa qadaitumus Salaata fazkurul laaha qiyaamanw wa qu'oodanw wa 'alaa junoobikum; fa izat maanantum fa aqeemus Salaah; innas Salaata kaanat 'alal mu'mineena kitaabam mawqootaa

"And when you have completed the prayer, remember Allah standing, sitting, or [lying] on your sides. But when you become secure, re-establish [regular] prayer. Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times."

    Quran 4:103. Translation: Sahih International.

The Prophet ﷺ said the prayer is the first deed a person will be asked about:

    إِنَّ أَوَّلَ مَا يُحَاسَبُ بِهِ الْعَبْدُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ صَلاَتُهُ فَإِنْ صَلُحَتْ فَقَدْ أَفْلَحَ وَأَنْجَحَ وَإِنْ فَسَدَتْ فَقَدْ خَابَ وَخَسِرَ

"The first of his deeds that a servant will be brought to account for on the Day of Resurrection is his prayer. If it is sound, he has succeeded and prospered. If it is corrupt, he has failed and lost."

Jami at-Tirmidhi 413, from Abu Hurayrah. At-Tirmidhi graded it hasan gharib; al-Albani and Ahmad Shakir graded it sahih.

He ﷺ also compared the five prayers to a river at your door that you bathe in five times a day, so that no dirt is left: "That is the example of the five prayers, by which Allah wipes away sins."1 And when asked which deed Allah loves most, he said: "Prayer at its time."2 That is why the tracker separates on time from late and qada: the aim is not just to pray, but to pray in time.

    What each mark means

    • On time: prayed within its time, without undue delay.
    • Late: prayed before its time ran out, but pushed to the end of it.
    • Qada: its time passed and you made it up later.
    • Missed: not prayed yet. Once made up, change it to qada.
    • Excused: menstruation or postnatal bleeding. Prayer is not owed and not made up, so the day neither counts nor breaks a streak.
    Hanafi position

It is preferred to pray Fajr when the light has spread (isfar), to delay Dhuhr in hot weather, to pray Asr before the sun turns pale, and Isha before a third of the night has passed. Delaying Asr until the sun pales, or Isha past the middle of the night without need, is disliked. Witr is wajib, so a missed witr is made up like a fard prayer.

    Other madhhabs
    Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali
Praying at the start of the time is generally best, including Fajr in the early dark. The Hanbali school prefers delaying Isha to a third of the night when it is not hard on people. Witr is a confirmed sunnah, so it is not owed as qada.

    Tips for staying consistent

"The most beloved of deeds to Allah are the most constant, even if they are few."

Sahih Muslim 783, from Aishah; also in Sahih al-Bukhari 6464.

    • Anchor each prayer to something fixed: Fajr to your alarm, Dhuhr to lunch, Maghrib to dinner. Check the prayer times each morning.
    • Fix one prayer at a time. The month view shows which one slips most. Aim for a week of that one on time first.
    • Log honestly. A "late" or "missed" mark is information, not a judgment.
    • Make up a missed prayer as soon as you remember. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever forgets a prayer, let him pray it when he remembers it."3
    • Keep the old backlog separate. For months or years owed from before, the qada calculator gives the number and a daily plan.

    Teaching children to pray

Allah told the Prophet ﷺ to teach prayer at home first:

    Surah Taha, 20:132Read in context

Waamur ahlaka bis Salaati wastabir 'alaihaa la nas'aluka rizqaa; nahnu narzuquk; wal 'aaqibatu littaqwaa

"And enjoin prayer upon your family [and people] and be steadfast therein. We ask you not for provision; We provide for you, and the [best] outcome is for [those of] righteousness."

    Quran 20:132. Translation: Sahih International.

"Command your children to pray when they are seven years old, and discipline them for it when they are ten, and separate them in their beds." The Arabic for "discipline" is literally "strike"; see the limits below.

Sunan Abi Dawud 495, from Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As, graded hasan sahih by al-Albani. A similar report from Sabrah ibn Mabad is in Sunan Abi Dawud 494 and Jami at-Tirmidhi 407 (hasan sahih).

    Hanafi position

The parent or guardian must tell the child to pray from the age of seven and teach them wudu and the prayer. Prayer is not yet fard on the child, so prayers a child misses before puberty are not owed later. From ten, if the child refuses, the guardian may discipline them, but only lightly and with the hand, not a stick, no more than three times, never on the face, and never in a way that hurts or harms. The aim is training, and gentle encouragement comes first.

    Other madhhabs
    Shafi'i, Hanbali
Telling the child to pray at seven, and light discipline from ten, are obligations on the guardian, within the same limits of no harm and not on the face.
    Maliki
Many Maliki scholars class the command at seven as recommended rather than obligatory. They also limit any discipline to what does not harm.

Using kids mode and the printable charts

    • Stars are for effort. Let a younger child copy you before seven, and praise every star in person.
    • Set a small reward goal. For example 35 stars, a full week, for a trip to the park. Each child added by name has their own stars and goal.
    • Print a chart for the fridge. The kids sheet has a star for each prayer and a line for the reward. The adult sheet has a box for each prayer and witr. Turn off "Fill in what I have logged" for a blank one.
    • Teach the steps. Our prayer guide and wudu guide read well aloud.
    1. Sahih al-Bukhari 528; Sahih Muslim 667, from Abu Hurayrah.
    2. Sahih al-Bukhari 527; Sahih Muslim 85, from Abdullah ibn Masud.
    3. Sahih al-Bukhari 597; Sahih Muslim 684, from Anas ibn Malik.
    4. Quran 4:103 and 20:132, Tanzil Uthmani text, translation Sahih International.
    5. Al-Marghinani, al-Hidayah, Bab al-Mawaqit, on the preferred times; Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar, Kitab al-Salah, on witr and on teaching and disciplining children. The other madhhabs' positions are summarised from their standard manuals.

    Questions

    Good to know

Is there a free printable salah tracker?

Yes. Pick a month in the panel and press Print adult sheet or Print kids sheet. Turn off "Fill in what I have logged" for a blank chart. Each sheet fits one A4 or Letter page, and you can save it as a PDF from the print window.

Does a qada prayer count towards my streak?

No. The streak counts days on which all five fard prayers were prayed in their time, on time or late. A qada prayer still clears the debt, so it leaves the missed total, but the day does not count as complete. Excused days neither count nor break the streak.

At what age should children start praying?

The Prophet ﷺ told parents to command children to pray at seven (Abu Dawud 495, hasan sahih). Many families start earlier with fun and copying. Prayer becomes fard at puberty.

    Should I track witr?

In the Hanafi school witr is wajib, so it is tracked by default and a missed witr is made up. In the Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali schools it is a confirmed sunnah; you can turn it off in Settings.

How do I move my salah tracker to a new phone?

Press Export my data to download a .json file, send it to your new device, open this page there and press Import a file. Nothing is stored on our servers.

How do I count years of missed prayers?

Use the qada calculator. It works out the number from when prayer became obligatory for you and gives a daily plan to make them up. This tracker covers each day from now on.
