Pay the value in money, or 2.5% of the gold itself, to people who can receive zakat.
Guide
Zakat on gold is 2.5% of its value on your zakat date, once you have owned gold at or above the nisab for a lunar year. The gold nisab is 87.48 g (7.5 tola, or 20 mithqal). To work it out: weigh your gold, find the pure gold in it from its karat, multiply by today's price of pure gold, and take 2.5%. The calculator above does this at live prices in 16 currencies.

"O you who have believed, indeed many of the scholars and the monks devour the wealth of people unjustly and avert [them] from the way of Allah. And those who hoard gold and silver and spend it not in the way of Allah - give them tidings of a painful punishment."
Quran 9:34, translation by Sahih International.
Say 24k gold is 128 dollars a gram and silver 1.60 dollars a gram (example prices only; the calculator uses today's). Fatima owns 100 g of 22k jewellery that she wears, and nothing else zakatable. The pure gold is 100 × 0.9167 = 91.67 g, worth 91.67 × 128 = $11,733.76. Her gold weighs more than 87.48 g, so in the Hanafi school zakat is due: 2.5% of $11,733.76 = $293.34. She could instead give 2.5 g of the 22k gold itself. In the other three schools, jewellery she wears is exempt, so nothing is due on it.
Yusuf owns 7 tola of 22k gold, which is 81.65 g. That is under 87.48 g, so if it were all he owned, no zakat would be due on it in the Hanafi school. But he also has $1,000 in savings. Gold and savings are added together by value: $9,580.22 for the gold (74.85 g of pure gold) plus $1,000 is $10,580.22. That is above the silver nisab of 612.36 × 1.60 = $979.78, so his zakat is $264.51, of which $239.51 is for the gold.
Zakat is due on all gold and silver, including jewellery a woman wears every day, as well as jewellery kept in a drawer, coins and bars. The evidence is the general wording of the Quran on gold and silver (9:34), and the hadith of the woman who came to the Prophet ﷺ with her daughter wearing two heavy gold bracelets. He asked: "Do you give zakat on these?" She said no. He said: "Would it please you if Allah put two bracelets of fire on you for them on the Day of Resurrection?" She took them off and gave them away.1 Abdullah ibn Masud also held that zakat is due on jewellery.2
Because the evidence is strong on both sides, some scholars of the other schools advise paying on worn jewellery as a precaution. If you follow the Hanafi school, include it.
If you own only gold and nothing else zakatable, its nisab is 87.48 g by weight. Gold that is more than half pure (14k and above) is treated as gold, so its full weight counts towards the 87.48 g, while the zakat is paid on its value, which follows its karat.4 If you also own cash, savings, silver or trade goods, everything is added together by value, and the silver nisab (612.36 g of silver) applies, because it is lower and better for the poor. In practice, most people with savings and any gold have reached the nisab.
| Unit | In grams | Gold nisab |
|---|---|---|
| 1 tola | 11.664 g | 7.5 tola |
| 1 troy ounce | 31.103 g | 2.81 troy oz |
| 1 mithqal (dinar) | 4.374 g | 20 mithqal |
| Gold nisab | 87.48 g | Some charities use 85 g, from a lighter mithqal |
Zakat is on the gold, not on the craftsmanship or the gemstones. So use the price of the gold it contains, which the calculator works out from the 24k spot price and the karat. A jeweller's retail price, which adds making charges, is too high. If you sell gold regularly, use the price a local dealer pays. Diamonds, pearls and other stones worn as jewellery are not zakatable unless they are held for trade.
Zakat is due once you have held at least the nisab for a full lunar year. Many people fix a date, such as 1 Ramadan, and value their gold on that day each year. You may pay in money, or give 2.5% of the gold itself, which is one part in forty. Pay it to people who can receive zakat: see who can receive zakat. Questions
If you have owned it for a lunar year, 2.5% of its value, which is the value of 2.5 g. For 22k gold that is 2.5% of the value of 91.67 g of pure gold. Enter it above to see the amount at today's price in your currency.
In the Hanafi school, yes, on all gold and silver, worn or not. In the Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali schools, permissible jewellery that is worn regularly is exempt. Gold kept as savings is zakatable in every school.
7.5 tola, which is 87.48 g. For silver it is 52.5 tola, or 612.36 g. In the Hanafi school, if you own gold together with cash or silver, the silver nisab applies.
You pay on the value of the pure gold in it, which is what 22k gold is worth. In the Hanafi school its full weight counts towards the 87.48 g nisab, because it is mostly gold. In the Shafi'i and Hanbali schools only the pure gold counts towards the nisab.
Yes. You can pay the value in money, or give 2.5% of the gold itself to someone eligible.
Yes, if it is yours and you have reached the nisab. Gold already given to your daughter belongs to her, so it counts in her wealth, not yours.
