Dua against the evil eye, ruqyah from the Sunnah

The Prophet ﷺ said: "The evil eye is real." He protected his family from it with short words of refuge, Jibril recited ruqyah over him, and when Al-Falaq and An-Nas were revealed he used them in place of everything else. These are the duas against the evil eye from authentic sources, with what to do if you think it has affected someone.

Dua 1: Ruqyah over someone (the words of Jibril)

Bismillāhi arqīk, min kulli shayʾin yuʾdhīk, min sharri kulli nafsin aw ʿayni ḥāsid, Allāhu yashfīk, bismillāhi arqīk

In the name of Allah I recite ruqyah over you, from everything that harms you, from the evil of every soul or envious eye. May Allah heal you. In the name of Allah I recite ruqyah over you.

Sahih Muslim 2186

Uʿīdhukumā bi-kalimātillāhit-tāmmah, min kulli shayṭāniw-wa hāmmah, wa min kulli ʿaynil-lāmmah

I seek protection for you both in the perfect words of Allah, from every devil and harmful creature, and from every evil eye. (For one boy say u'idhuka, for one girl u'idhuki, and for yourself a'udhu.)

Guide

When and how to say it

The Prophet ﷺ said: "The evil eye is real." He protected his family from it with short words of refuge, Jibril recited ruqyah over him, and when Al-Falaq and An-Nas were revealed he used them in place of everything else. These are the duas against the evil eye from authentic sources, with what to do if you think it has affected someone.

Is the evil eye real?

Yes. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The evil eye is real. If anything were to overtake the decree, the evil eye would." In the same hadith he said: "If you are asked to wash, then wash."1 Abu Sa'id reported that the Prophet ﷺ used to seek refuge from the jinn and from the eye of people until Al-Falaq and An-Nas were revealed, and then he used them and left everything else.2

Protecting yourself and your children

  • Recite Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas three times each, morning and evening, and before sleep, and blow into your hands and wipe over your body.
  • Recite Ayat al-Kursi after each prayer and before sleep.
  • Say Dua 2 over your children, as the Prophet ﷺ did over his grandsons.
  • When you admire something, say mashaAllah and make a dua for blessing (Dua 5) so your admiration does no harm.

If you think someone has the evil eye

  1. Recite ruqyah over them: Al-Fatiha, Ayat al-Kursi, Al-Falaq and An-Nas, and the words of Jibril (Dua 1), blowing lightly after reciting. You can do this for yourself too: when the Prophet ﷺ was ill he recited the last surahs over himself and blew.3
  2. If you know whose eye it was, ask them kindly to wash and pour the water over the one affected. When Amir ibn Rabi'ah's admiring look made Sahl ibn Hunayf ill, the Prophet ﷺ told Amir to wash for him, and asked: "Why did you not pray for blessing?"4
  3. See a doctor as well. Not every illness or setback is the evil eye, and treatment is part of the Sunnah.

What ruqyah is allowed

The Prophet ﷺ said: "There is no harm in ruqyah as long as it contains no shirk," and he warned that spells, amulets and love charms of shirk are shirk.5 Ruqyah should be in words that are understood, from the Quran, Allah's names or known duas, with the belief that only Allah heals.

Hanafi position

Ruqyah with the Quran, Allah's names and authentic duas is permitted, and blowing after reciting is sunnah. Many Hanafi scholars also permit hanging a ta'wiz that contains only Quran or known duas, reading the warning about amulets as aimed at amulets of shirk. Anything with unknown words, or a belief that the object itself protects, is forbidden.

Other madhhabs
Hanbali
Many Hanbali scholars forbid hanging any amulet, even one with Quran, to close the door to shirk; others in the school allow it.
Shafi'i, Maliki
Ruqyah with the Quran is permitted. Scholars of both schools differ on hanging written Quran, while agreeing that amulets of shirk are forbidden.

About Quran 68:51

"And indeed, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes" (68:51, translation by Sahih International). Many commentators, including Ibn Kathir, explain it as a reference to the evil eye. No hadith prescribes reciting it as a cure, so recite it as you would any Quran, but rely on the surahs and duas the Prophet ﷺ himself used.

Questions

Good to know

What is the dua against the evil eye?

Bismillahi arqik, min kulli shay'in yu'dhik, min sharri kulli nafsin aw ayni hasid, Allahu yashfik (Muslim 2186), and for children U'idhukuma bi-kalimatillahit-tammah... wa min kulli aynin lammah (Abu Dawud 4737).

Which surah is for the evil eye?

Al-Falaq and An-Nas. The Prophet ﷺ used them for refuge from the evil eye once they were revealed (Tirmidhi 2058). Recite them with Al-Ikhlas three times morning and evening.

How do I know if I have the evil eye?

There is no sure sign in the Quran or hadith. Do ruqyah and the daily adhkar, and see a doctor for any illness. Do not blame every problem on the eye or accuse people without proof.

Can I do ruqyah on myself?

Yes. The Prophet ﷺ recited the last surahs over himself and blew when he was ill (Bukhari 5016).

What should I say when I like something, so I do not give the evil eye?

Say mashaAllah and a dua for blessing, such as Allahumma barik lahu. The Prophet ﷺ told the one who admires something to pray for blessing on it (Ibn Majah 3509).
