Ramadan Mubarak, what to write and when to send it
Ramadan Mubarak (رَمَضَانُ مُبَارَكٌ) means "a blessed Ramadan", and Ramadan Kareem (رَمَضَانُ كَرِيمٌ) means "a generous Ramadan". Both are used to welcome the month. The card maker above puts either one, or the Prophet's ﷺ own words, on a card with your names and a message.
The words of the hadith
At the start of Ramadan the Prophet ﷺ gave his Companions the good news: "Ramadan has come to you, a blessed month. Allah has made fasting it obligatory on you. In it the gates of heaven are opened" (Sunan an-Nasa'i 2106, from Abu Hurayrah). Al-Albani graded it sahih, while some scholars note a break in its chain and accept it through its supporting reports. Scholars took it as a basis for congratulating one another when Ramadan arrives. Choose "Atakum Ramadan" in the Greeting box to use its opening words.
Ramadan Mubarak or Ramadan Kareem?
Both are fine in the view of most scholars. A few disliked Ramadan Kareem, because the month itself gives nothing: it is Allah who is generous in it. Most see no problem, since Arabic often calls a time generous because of what Allah gives in it, as the Quran is called kareem, noble (56:77). If you want to avoid the question, use Ramadan Mubarak. Is it allowed to congratulate people on Ramadan?
Hanafi position
Congratulating one another at the start of Ramadan is permissible and good. The sunnah has no fixed wording, so Ramadan Mubarak, Ramadan Kareem or any good words are fine. Ibn Abidin records that congratulating one another on blessed occasions such as Eid is not disliked, and Hanafi scholars apply the same to Ramadan.
Other madhhabs

- Ibn Rajab cites the hadith "Ramadan has come to you, a blessed month" as a basis for congratulating one another on Ramadan (Lata'if al-Ma'arif).
- Shafi'i and Maliki
- The same in substance: a good greeting at the start of Ramadan is allowed, with no fixed wording.
When to send your Ramadan card
Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin on Monday 8 February 2027, with the first taraweeh on the night of Sunday 7 February. Most people send greetings once the moon is announced and through the first days of the month. See the Ramadan countdown.

How to reply
Reply with "Ramadan Mubarak to you too", or with a dua such as "may Allah accept from us and from you". To Ramadan Kareem, many Arabs reply Allahu akram, "Allah is more generous". More on the Ramadan Mubarak page.
