Guide

Your age in Hijri years, and why it is higher

Your Hijri age is your age counted in Islamic lunar years. A Hijri year has 12 lunar months of 29 or 30 days, about 354.37 days, which is around 11 days shorter than a Gregorian year. So your Hijri age is always a little higher than your usual age: roughly one extra year for every 33 Gregorian years. Your Islamic birthday, the Hijri date you were born, moves about 11 days earlier each Gregorian year.

A worked example

Someone born on Saturday 1 January 2000 was born on 24 Ramadan 1420 in the Umm al-Qura calendar. On 30 October 2026, which is 19 Jumada al-Ula 1448, they are 26 in Gregorian years but 27 in Hijri years, since they passed 24 Ramadan 1447 in March 2026. Their Hijri birthday in 1448 falls on 24 Ramadan 1448, which is Wednesday 3 March 2027, in the last ten nights of Ramadan.

How the tool works it out

  1. It converts your date of birth to the Hijri calendar with the Umm al-Qura tables built into your browser, the calendar used in Saudi Arabia. If you tick that you were born after Maghrib, it moves to the next Hijri date, since the Islamic day starts at sunset.
  2. It does the same for today, and counts the full Hijri years, months and days between them.
  3. It finds the Gregorian date of your Hijri birthday in this Hijri year and the next three. If you were born on the 30th and that month has only 29 days in a given year, it uses the 29th.

Local moon sighting can put your country a day ahead of or behind Umm al-Qura. Use the adjustment if your masjid's dates differ. To convert any other date, use the Hijri date converter, and see the whole year on the Islamic calendar.

Where lunar years matter in Islam

The Quran says: "Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months" (9:36), and Islamic rulings that depend on time use Hijri years. Zakat is due after a full lunar year (hawl) of owning the nisab, which is 354 or 355 days, not 365. When the Companions spoke of ages they meant lunar years: Aisha reported that the Prophet ﷺ passed away at the age of sixty-three.1 In the Hanafi school, if no physical signs of puberty appear, a child is treated as an adult at 15 lunar years, the view of Abu Yusuf and Muhammad on which the fatwa is given.2

  1. Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, from Aisha.
  2. Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar, Kitab al-Hajr; Imam Abu Hanifa's own view was 18 for boys and 17 for girls. The Shafi'i and Hanbali schools also use 15 lunar years; the well-known Maliki view is 18.
