Guide
Choosing a boy's name, what to look for.
A good Muslim boy name is one with a good meaning. That is the one rule the Sunnah sets: the Prophet ﷺ kept names with good meanings and changed names with bad ones.1 This list has 283 Muslim boy names, each with its Arabic spelling, meaning and origin, and a page that explains it in full. Filter by first letter, by origin, or by names from the Quran, and save the ones you like.
The names the Prophet ﷺ loved most
The Prophet ﷺ said: "The most beloved of your names to Allah are Abdullah and Abdur-Rahman."2 Scholars count every name made of Abd and one of Allah's names after these two. This list has 27 of them, such as Abdul-Ahad, Abdul-Aziz, Abdul-Bari, Abdul-Ghaffar, Abdul-Ghafur and Abdul-Hadi. Call the child by the full name: Abdur-Rahman, not Rahman, because ar-Rahman is a name of Allah alone.
Names of prophets
Naming a son after a prophet is a sunnah. When his own son was born, the Prophet ﷺ said: "A boy was born to me tonight, and I named him after my father, Ibrahim."3 The prophets' names here are Adam, Ahmad, Ayyub, Dawud, Harun, Hud, Ibrahim, Idris, Ilyas, Isa, Ishaq, Ismail, Muhammad, Musa, Nuh, Salih, Shuayb, Sulayman, Yahya, Yaqub, Yunus, Yusuf and Zakariyya.
Names from the Quran
115 of these boys' names are in the Quran, either as a name or as a word. The Quran filter above shows them all. A few examples: Aabid, Aariz, Abdullah, Abdur-Rahman, Abrar, Adham, Ali and Amil. A name does not need to be in the Quran to be a good name, but many parents like the link to a verse.
Companions and great Muslims of the past
48 names here were carried by companions of the Prophet ﷺ or the women of his family, such as Abbas, Abdul-Aziz, Abdul-Malik, Abdullah, Affan, Ali, Amir and Ammar. Each name page lists the famous people who carried it.
Arabic, Persian, Turkish and Urdu names
A Muslim name does not have to be Arabic. Scholars allow names from any language when the meaning is good and the name does not belong to another religion. Most names here are Arabic. There are also 9 Persian names, such as Aftab, Arman, Faraz and Kamran, 8 Turkish names, such as Alparslan, Ayan, Aydin and Emre, and 28 names common in Urdu, such as Aariz, Abdul-Haq, Abdul-Qayyum and Aftab. Many South Asian names are Arabic words said the Urdu way, so they carry both labels.
Names to avoid
- Names that make someone the servant of anyone other than Allah, such as Abdun-Nabi or Abdul-Husayn.
- Names that belong to Allah alone, such as ar-Rahman or al-Khaliq, without Abd before them.
- Names with bad or proud meanings. A few popular names sound fine in English but mean something else in Arabic: each page here checks the Arabic first.
See also what bin, bint, abu and al mean in a full name, and the full list of boys' and girls' names.
- Sahih Muslim 2139: the Prophet ﷺ changing a name with a bad meaning.
- Sahih Muslim 2132: the names most beloved to Allah.
- Sahih Muslim 2315: the Prophet ﷺ naming his son Ibrahim.
- Meanings follow classical Arabic usage and the standard name dictionaries; Persian, Turkish and Urdu meanings follow the standard dictionaries of those languages. Our teachers will check each one.

Questions
Good to know.
What is the best Muslim name for a boy?

Which Muslim boy names are in the Quran?
115 names in this list are in the Quran as a name or a word. The prophets' names, such as Ibrahim, Musa and Yusuf, are there, and so are words like Aabid, Aariz, Abdullah and Abdur-Rahman. Use the From the Quran filter to see them all.
Can a Muslim boy have a Persian or Turkish name?
Yes. A Muslim name does not have to be Arabic. Scholars allow a name from any language when its meaning is good and it is not tied to another religion, such as Aftab (the sun) in Persian or Aydin (bright) in Turkish.
What are Muslim boy names starting with A?
There are 61 here, including Ahmad, Adam, Ali, Ammar, Anas and Ayman. See the full list of Muslim boy names starting with A.
