Deen is the Arabic word for religion, but it means more than belief and ritual. It is a whole way of living under Allah's guidance: worship, family, work, money and manners. Dunya is this present world and everything in it. Muslims often put the two side by side to ask a simple question: which one is in charge?
The word deen
The root d-y-n joins several ideas: dayn, a debt owed; obedience and submission; and judgement and recompense. Allah is Maliki yawmid-din, "Sovereign of the Day of Recompense" (1:4). So deen is the way of life you owe your Lord, on which you will be judged. "Indeed, the religion in the sight of Allah is Islam" (3:19). "There shall be no compulsion in religion" (2:256). And Surah Al-Kafirun ends: lakum dinukum wa liya din, "For you is your religion, and for me is my religion" (109:6).
The word dunya
Dunya is the feminine of adna, which means both nearer and lower. This life is the near one, which we see now, and the lower one compared to the akhirah, "the last", which is the Hereafter. "Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children" (57:20). "But you prefer the worldly life, while the Hereafter is better and more enduring" (87:16-17).
Balance, not escape
Wabtaghi feemaaa aataakal laahud Daaral Aakhirata wa laa tansa naseebaka minad dunyaa wa ahsin kamaaa ahsanal laahu ilaika wa laa tabghil fasaada fil ardi innal laaha laa yuhibbul mufsideen
But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allah does not like corrupters."
Quran 28:77 · Sahih International · Read in Surah Al-Qasas
Islam does not ask you to leave the world. It asks you to use it for the akhirah. The most frequent dua of the Prophet ﷺ asked for both: Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah wa fil-akhirati hasanah (2:201). Work, marriage and earning are part of the deen when done for Allah. What the Quran warns against is loving the dunya so much that it pushes the akhirah out.
Deen and dunya in the hadith
كُنْ فِي الدُّنْيَا كَأَنَّكَ غَرِيبٌ أَوْ عَابِرُ سَبِيلٍ
"Be in this world as though you were a stranger or a traveller passing through."
Sahih al-Bukhari 6416, from Ibn Umar
الدُّنْيَا سِجْنُ الْمُؤْمِنِ وَجَنَّةُ الْكَافِرِ
"The world is a prison for the believer and a paradise for the disbeliever."
Sahih Muslim 2956, from Abu Hurayrah
On the deen itself: "The religion is ease" (Sahih al-Bukhari 39, from Abu Hurayrah), and "The religion is sincerity (nasihah)" (Sahih Muslim 55, from Tamim al-Dari).
What "deen over dunya" means
It is a modern phrase, not a hadith. It means that when the two clash, the deen wins: you pray even when the meeting runs late, you turn down the haram income, you choose a spouse for their faith. It does not mean neglecting your studies, job or health. A Muslim can be a good doctor or engineer, and that work is worship when the intention is right.
"Half of the deen"
People say marriage is "half the deen". It comes from a report: "When a servant marries, he has completed half of the religion, so let him fear Allah in the other half" (al-Bayhaqi, Shu'ab al-Iman, from Anas). Its chains are weak, and some scholars, such as al-Albani, graded it hasan through its routes taken together. The meaning, that marriage protects a person's faith, is supported by sound hadith.
