The dua for Laylat al-Qadr

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي

Allāhumma innaka ʿafuwwun tuḥibbul-ʿafwa faʿfu ʿannī

Guide

Is it Laylat al-Qadr tonight? How to tell, and why no one can be sure

No one can say for certain that a given night is Laylat al-Qadr. The Prophet ﷺ told us to seek it in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan,1 so if tonight is the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th or 29th night, it is one of the nights it may be. The banner above tells you which night tonight is, for your city and your Ramadan start date.

When does each night start and end?

An Islamic night comes before its day. The 27th night begins at Maghrib on the evening after the 26th fast and ends at Fajr, when the 27th fast begins. With Ramadan 2027 starting on Monday 8 February, the odd nights begin on the evenings of Sat 27 Feb, Mon 1 Mar, Wed 3 Mar, Fri 5 Mar and Sun 7 Mar. If your masjid started Ramadan on Tuesday 9 February, each night is one evening later. Tap the second date in the tool to switch.

Why the date can differ where you live

Places that begin Ramadan on different days count the nights differently. Your 27th night may be someone else's 26th. Scholars say each community follows its own start, so seek the night by your local count, and, if you can, strive in all ten nights so you do not miss it whichever count is right.

The signs of the night

Ubayy ibn Kab said the sign is that the sun rises the next morning white, without strong rays.2 That sign is only seen after the night has passed, which is part of the wisdom of keeping it hidden: people worship on every night instead of one.

What to do tonight

  • Pray Isha and taraweeh, and pray in the last third of the night if you can. See when tonight's last third begins.
  • Repeat the dua above, the one the Prophet ﷺ taught Aishah for this night.
  • Recite Quran, make istighfar and ask for your needs. Give some charity.
  • "Whoever stands in prayer on Laylat al-Qadr out of faith and hoping for reward will have his past sins forgiven."3

In the last ten, the Prophet ﷺ would tighten his waist-wrap, spend the night in worship and wake his family.4 For the full guide, the 27th night, and itikaf, see Laylatul Qadr 2027.

Women in their period

Hanafi position

A woman in her period does not pray or touch the mushaf, and in the relied-upon Hanafi view does not recite the Quran. She can still earn the night: make dua, dhikr and istighfar, say the Laylat al-Qadr dua, listen to the Quran and give charity.

Other madhhabs
Maliki
She may recite the Quran from memory, without touching the mushaf.
Shafi'i, Hanbali
As in the Hanafi school: no prayer and no recitation as Quran, but dua, dhikr and charity.
