Guide

About the day 1 to 30 lists, and how to use this one.

There is no authentic hadith that gives a special dua for each day of Ramadan. The list shared every year, where each day begins "O Allah, on this day...", is not found in Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, the four Sunan or the other hadith collections. It comes from later devotional books with no chain of narration that hadith scholars accept. Its meanings are mostly good, but it should not be passed on as the words of the Prophet ﷺ or as duas fixed to certain days.

This page does something simpler. For each day it gives one dua whose source is known: 20 from the Quran and 10 from sahih or hasan hadith, with the grading named. None of them belongs only to its day. The order is just a plan, so that by the end of the month you have learnt thirty duas of the Quran and Sunnah and can keep them for life.

The duas that are tied to Ramadan

  • On seeing the new moon: the dua for Day 1, said for every new month. See the new moon dua.
  • At suhoor: there is no set dua for starting the fast. The intention is in the heart. See dua for starting the fast.
  • At iftar: Dhahaba al-zama'u wabtallatil-uruqu wa thabatal-ajru in sha Allah (Sunan Abi Dawud 2357, graded hasan). See the dua for breaking the fast.
  • In the last ten nights: Allahumma innaka afuwwun tuhibbul-afwa fa'fu anni (Tirmidhi 3513), the dua for Day 21. See Laylatul Qadr.

When the fasting person's dua is hoped to be answered

A hadith in Tirmidhi names the fasting person, when he breaks his fast, among three whose dua is not rejected.1 Al-Albani graded it weak, while others graded it hasan, and a similar report in Ibn Majah is also disputed.2 What is certain is that dua is worship, that Allah said "I am near" in the middle of the fasting verses,3 and that the last third of the night is a time of answered dua.4 So use the minutes before iftar and before suhoor.

What about the three ashras?

The idea that the first ten days are for mercy, the middle ten for forgiveness and the last ten for freedom from the Fire comes from a weak report, and the special dua for each ashra is not from the hadith. The full explanation is on the three ashras of Ramadan and dua for the first 10 days.

Reading Quranic duas during a period

Hanafi position

A woman in her period may say the Quranic duas on this page with the intention of dua and praise, not of reciting the Quran. The Hanafi scholars allow this for verses that carry the meaning of dua, such as Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah, while reciting the Quran as Quran is not allowed. The hadith duas can be said freely.

Other madhhabs
Shafi'i, Hanbali
The same: Quranic words are allowed with the intention of dhikr or dua, not of recitation.
Maliki
She may also recite the Quran from memory during her period, so these duas are allowed either way.
  1. Jami at-Tirmidhi 3598, from Abu Hurayrah. Graded weak by al-Albani and Ahmad Shakir, hasan by Bashar Awad Maarouf.
  2. Sunan Ibn Majah 1753, from Abdullah ibn Amr. Graded weak by al-Albani, hasan by Shuaib al-Arnaut.
  3. Quran 2:186.
  4. Sahih al-Bukhari 1145; Sahih Muslim 758.

Questions

Good to know.

Is there a special dua for each day of Ramadan?

No. The popular day 1 to 30 list ("O Allah, on this day...") is not in any hadith collection. This page gives one sourced dua from the Quran or authentic hadith for each day instead.

What is the best dua in Ramadan?

There is no single one, but the dua the Prophet ﷺ made most often was Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah wa fil-akhirati hasanah wa qina adhaban-nar (Bukhari 6389), and in the last ten nights Allahumma innaka afuwwun tuhibbul-afwa fa'fu anni (Tirmidhi 3513).

What dua do I read at iftar?

Dhahaba al-zama'u wabtallatil-uruqu wa thabatal-ajru in sha Allah: "The thirst has gone, the veins are moist, and the reward is certain, if Allah wills" (Abu Dawud 2357, graded hasan).

Is there a dua for suhoor?

No set dua. Say Bismillah before eating and make the intention to fast in your heart. The common wa bi sawmi ghadin wording is not from the hadith.

Can I make dua in English while fasting?

Yes. Personal dua can be in any language. Learning the Arabic duas from the Quran and Sunnah is a bonus, not a condition.
