- Why is music haram in Islam? In the Hanafi school, and in the four schools in principle, playing and listening to musical instruments for entertainment is haram. The main proof is a hadith that lists instruments with wine and zina as things people will wrongly make lawful. The duff (frame drum) at weddings and Eid is the main exception, and a minority of scholars allow more.
- Is singing haram in Islam? No, singing itself is not haram. In the Hanafi school, singing or chanting without instruments is allowed when the words are clean and it does not lead to sin. Songs with sinful words, singing meant to stir desire, and a woman singing for non-mahram men are not allowed. Singing with instruments takes the ruling of music.
- Are nasheeds halal, and is the duff allowed?Yes. Nasheeds with clean words and no instruments are halal in the Hanafi school. The duff (a simple frame drum) is allowed at weddings and on occasions of joy such as Eid. Nasheeds with background music, or with voice effects made to sound just like instruments, take the ruling of music.
- Is it a sin to hear music in a shop or by accident? No. You carry no sin for music that reaches your ears without your choice, in a shop, a taxi, a school or a workplace. The Hanafi scholars separate hearing from listening: the sin is in choosing to listen and enjoy it. Avoid it when you easily can, but you do not have to leave your job or stop shopping.
- Is taking pictures haram in Islam? It depends on the subject and the form. Pictures of landscapes and buildings are fine. For people and animals, the traditional Hanafi fatwa treats photos as forbidden images except for need, while many later Hanafi scholars allow digital photos kept on a screen for a valid purpose. Selfies follow the same rules, plus the rules of modesty.
- Is drawing haram in Islam? No, drawing in general is not haram. Drawing landscapes, buildings, plants, patterns and calligraphy is permitted. In the Hanafi school, drawing a complete person or animal with its face is not allowed. Drawing them without a head or with the face left blank, or only a part such as a hand, is permitted.
- Are Muslims allowed to have dogs?Yes, for a real need. In the Hanafi school you may keep a dog to guard your home or farm, herd, hunt, or as a guide or service dog. Keeping a dog only as a pet is not permitted, and it should not live inside the house. Being kind to dogs is still rewarded.
- Is it haram to touch a dog?No. Touching a dog is not haram and does not break wudu. In the Hanafi school a dog's body is not impure in itself, but its saliva is, so if a dog licks you or your clothes, wash that spot. The Shafi'i and Hanbali schools treat the whole dog as impure and require washing seven times, once with soil, after wet contact.
- Can Muslims have cats and other pets?Yes. Keeping a cat is permitted and loved in Islam, and so are birds, fish and other harmless pets. Cats are pure, so their fur and touch do not affect your wudu or prayer. You must feed and care for any pet properly, because neglecting an animal is a sin. Dogs are the exception, kept only for a need.
- Is chess haram in Islam? In the Hanafi school playing chess is makruh tahrimi (close to haram), and with betting it is fully haram. The Maliki and Hanbali schools also prohibit it. The Shafi'i school allows it with conditions: no money, no delayed prayers, no foul language and no excess. Backgammon and similar dice games are haram in all four schools.
- Are video games haram in Islam? Not in themselves. Video games are permitted in the Hanafi view when the content is clean and they do not take you away from your duties. They become haram with nudity, music, mockery of religion, shirk or gambling features such as paid loot boxes, or when they cause missed prayers or addiction.
- Is watching anime and movies haram? It depends on the content. Watching anime, cartoons, films or series is not haram as an act, but much mainstream content includes music, nudity or immodest scenes, or ideas against Islam, and watching those is haram. Clean content in moderation is allowed under the view many Hanafi scholars take on digital images.
- Are birthdays haram in Islam? The mainstream Hanafi fatwa is to avoid birthday celebrations, because they are not part of the sunnah and copy a custom of non-Muslim societies. Thanking Allah for another year, making dua and doing good deeds are fine. Some respected scholars allow a simple family meal as a cultural custom with no religious meaning.
- Is it haram to celebrate Christmas?Yes. Celebrating Christmas as a festival is not permitted for Muslims in the Hanafi school or the other three, because it is a religious festival of another faith. You can still be kind to Christian family and colleagues, accept their gifts and enjoy the day off. Avoid the religious rites, the decorations and parties with alcohol.
- Is Halloween haram in Islam?Yes. Muslims should not celebrate Halloween. It grew out of a pagan festival about the spirits of the dead, and today it centres on ghosts, witches and the occult, which clash with Islamic belief. The Hanafi scholars, like the other schools, forbid adopting the festivals of other faiths. Being kind to neighbours remains a duty.
- Is it haram to celebrate Thanksgiving?Scholars differ. Many Hanafi muftis advise against celebrating Thanksgiving as a holiday, since Islam has its own two Eids and the day has religious roots. Many North American scholars see it as a national, secular holiday and allow a family meal on the day off, without treating it as an Eid. The food must be halal either way.
- Is Valentine's Day haram?Yes, in the mainstream Hanafi view Muslims should not celebrate Valentine's Day. It is named after a Christian saint, and today it mostly promotes dating and relationships outside marriage, which Islam forbids. Married couples do not need a special day: love, gifts and kind words to your spouse are rewarded all year.
- Do Muslims celebrate Mother's Day?Mother's Day is not an Islamic occasion, and many Hanafi muftis advise against observing it as a fixed celebration, since it copies a custom of other societies. In Islam honouring your mother is a duty every day. Some scholars see no harm in a gift or a call on that day if it is not treated as an Eid. Father's Day is the same.
- Is it haram to swear on your mother's life or on the Quran?Swearing by anything other than Allah, such as your mother's life, your children or the Kaaba, is not allowed: the Hanafi school rates it makruh tahrimi, and it is not a valid oath. Swearing by the Quran is a valid oath in the later Hanafi fatwa, because the Quran is Allah's speech.
- Are white lies haram in Islam?Yes. Lying is haram even when it seems small or harmless, and that includes lying to make people laugh. Islam allows only narrow exceptions: to make peace between people, in war, and between spouses to keep love alive. Jokes are fine when they are true, and indirect wording (tawriya) is allowed when the plain truth would cause harm.
- What is backbiting in Islam?Backbiting (ghibah) is saying something true about a person in their absence that they would dislike. If it is untrue, it is slander (buhtan), which is worse. Backbiting is a major sin by the agreement of the scholars, and listening to it without objecting shares in the sin. A few real needs make it allowed, such as seeking advice or warning someone.
- Is it haram to sleep on your stomach? It is not haram, but it is disliked (makruh). The Prophet ﷺ saw a man lying on his stomach and said that this is a way of lying down that Allah does not love. The sunnah is to sleep on your right side. If you need to lie on your stomach for a medical reason, there is no blame.
- What does it mean to see a snake in a dream in Islam? There is no fixed meaning. The classical dream interpreters often read a snake as an enemy, its size and strength showing how dangerous that enemy is, and killing it as overcoming him. But a frightening dream may simply come from Shaytan or your own worries. If it scared you, seek refuge in Allah and do not tell people about it.
- Is it haram to have a girlfriend or boyfriend in Islam?Yes. Dating and girlfriend or boyfriend relationships are haram in the Hanafi school and all four schools. The Quran rules out taking secret lovers, and Islam closes the doors to zina: being alone together, flirting and touching. Working or studying alongside the opposite sex with modesty is allowed. If you like someone, involve your families and seek marriage.
- Is magic haram in Islam?Yes. Real magic (sihr) is haram and one of the seven destructive sins. Learning or practising it is disbelief when it involves calling on jinn or devils or words of kufr. Going to a magician to remove magic is also not allowed: the cure is ruqyah with the Quran. Stage tricks based purely on skill are a different matter, though many scholars still advise against them.
- Is reading horoscopes haram in Islam?Yes. Reading horoscopes and zodiac predictions is haram, even just for fun, and believing that the stars decide your character, luck or future goes against tawhid. Only Allah knows the unseen. Astronomy, the science of the stars used for prayer times, the qibla and the calendar, is permitted and praised.
- Is the evil eye real, and can you wear a nazar for protection?Yes, the evil eye is real: the Prophet ﷺ said so plainly. But wearing a blue nazar bead, a hamsa hand or a similar charm for protection is haram, because it puts trust in an object. Protection comes from Allah through the Quran, the morning and evening adhkar, ruqyah, and saying mashaAllah or barakAllah when you admire something.
- Are superstitions like black cats and the number 13 haram in Islam?Yes. Believing that black cats, the number 13, Friday the 13th, broken mirrors or a certain month bring bad luck is haram in Islam. The Prophet ﷺ called taking bad omens (tiyarah) a form of shirk. Good and harm come only from Allah. Optimism, hoping for good from a kind word, is encouraged.
