Is the evil eye real, and can you wear a nazar for protection?

Pending review by our scholars

Short answer

Yes, the evil eye is real: the Prophet ﷺ said so plainly. But wearing a blue nazar bead, a hamsa hand or a similar charm for protection is haram, because it puts trust in an object. Protection comes from Allah through the Quran, the morning and evening adhkar, ruqyah, and saying mashaAllah or barakAllah when you admire something.

Hanafi position

Belief in the evil eye is correct. Hanging beads, charms or objects for protection is haram, and shirk if one believes the object itself protects. A ta'wiz containing only Quran or authentic duas is permitted in the Hanafi school when one relies on Allah alone, though recitation is better.

Other madhhabs
Hanbali
Some Hanbali scholars, following the students of Ibn Mas'ud, do not allow even amulets that contain only Quran, and prefer recitation alone.

Explanation

The Prophet ﷺ said that the evil eye is real, and that if anything could outrun destiny, the eye would. When Amir ibn Rabi'ah admired Sahl ibn Hunayf and Sahl fell ill, he asked why a man would kill his brother, told Amir he should have asked for blessing, and had him wash for Sahl. So the eye can come even from a friend, without bad intention.

The blue nazar bead and the hamsa hand are charms. The Prophet ﷺ said that spells, amulets and love charms are shirk. When a person believes the bead itself keeps harm away, it is shirk. Even without that belief it is haram, because it ties the heart to an object instead of Allah. Ruqyah with the Quran and words that contain no shirk is allowed.

Protection that the sunnah teaches:

  • The morning and evening adhkar, with al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq and al-Nas three times.
  • Ayat al-Kursi after each prayer and before sleep.
  • The dua the Prophet ﷺ read over his grandsons, seeking refuge in Allah's perfect words from every devil and every harmful eye (see dua against evil eye).
  • Saying mashaAllah or barakAllah when you admire something, so your own eye does no harm.

Do not blame every hardship on the eye or become suspicious of people. Keep your adhkar, put your trust in Allah, and see a doctor for illness.

The evidence

Quran, Surah Al-Qalam 68:51

And indeed, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes when they hear the message, and they say, "Indeed, he is mad."

Scholars cite this verse as showing the effect of the eye.

Quran, Surah Al-Kahf 18:39

And why did you, when you entered your garden, not say, 'What Allah willed [has occurred]; there is no power except in Allah '? Although you see me less than you in wealth and children,

Saying mashaAllah when admiring a blessing protects it.
