Can you use soap and shampoo in ihram?

Pending review by our scholars

Short answer

Yes, unscented soap and shampoo are fine in ihram and you may shower. Avoid scented products. In the Hanafi school, using scented soap is makruh but many Hanafi muftis say it brings no penalty, since soap is a cleaner and not perfume; the Shafi'i and Hanbali schools treat scented soap as perfume.

Hanafi position

Bathing in ihram is permitted, and unscented soap and shampoo may be used. Scented soap is makruh to use; many Hanafi muftis hold that no dam or sadaqah is due for it, because its scent is subordinate to its cleaning purpose. Rub gently so hair does not fall.

Other madhhabs
Shafi'i
Soap with a clear perfume counts as perfume, so using it on purpose in ihram requires fidyah.
Hanbali
Scented soap counts as perfume and is forbidden in ihram, with fidyah if used knowingly.

Explanation

Washing in ihram is allowed by agreement. When a man died in ihram, the Prophet ﷺ told the companions to wash him with water and sidr (lote-tree leaves, the soap of the time) but not to perfume him. This shows that cleaning the body is fine in ihram while perfume is not.

  • Unscented soap, shampoo and body wash: allowed. Many pharmacies in Makkah sell "ihram-safe" unscented products.
  • Scented soap: avoid it. In the Hanafi school it is makruh and many muftis say no penalty is due; other schools are stricter, so the cautious choice is unscented.
  • Hotel toiletries: they are usually scented, so bring your own.
  • Wet wipes and hand sanitiser: scented wipes count as perfume. Unscented alcohol gel is fine.
  • Toothpaste: allowed, as it is used for cleaning and its flavour is not perfume.

When washing your hair or beard, be gentle so you do not pull hairs out. If a few hairs fall without you meaning to, Hanafi jurists still require a small sadaqah, so a light hand matters more than the soap.

A shower to cool down or freshen up is not disliked. Some pilgrims avoid washing altogether, thinking it breaks ihram; it does not.
