Short answer
Yes. Counting dhikr on prayer beads (tasbih or misbaha) is permissible in the Hanafi school and in the four schools. Counting on your fingers is the sunnah way and slightly better, because your fingers will speak for you on the Day of Judgement. A digital counter has the same ruling as beads.
Using beads to count dhikr is mubah (permissible), and there is no harm in it as long as it is not done for show. Counting on the fingertips of the right hand is better, following the Sunnah.
The four schools agree on this.
Explanation
Abdullah ibn Amr said he saw the Prophet ﷺ counting tasbih on his hand. He told the women among the Companions to count on their fingertips, because the fingertips will be questioned and will be made to speak. So counting on the fingers is the sunnah way and the better one.
Beads are a tool for the same purpose. Abu Dawud records that Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas saw the Prophet ﷺ with a woman counting her dhikr on date stones or pebbles and he did not forbid it, though scholars differ on that chain. Several of the early Muslims counted on stones or knotted strings, and the Hanafi texts state there is no harm in the misbaha. The four schools permit it. Some contemporary scholars called beads an innovation; most scholars see them as a counting aid, like a pen for writing.
- Use beads to help you count, not as jewellery or for show.
- Do not click them idly while talking or in salah.
- When you can, count on your fingers, especially for the adhkar after salah.
- A phone counter like the online tasbih counter has the same ruling.
For what to say, see the daily dhikr list and SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar.
