Guide

Searching the Quran, and getting good results

Type a word and every ayah that contains it appears, with the Arabic, the transliteration, the Sahih International translation and a play button. Type an ayah number such as 2:255 or a range such as 36:1-12 to go straight to it, or pick a topic to see the best-known ayat on it first, followed by every other ayah that mentions it.

Four ways to search

  • English words. Words match from their start, so forgiv finds forgive, forgiving and forgiveness. Several words find ayat that contain all of them. Put a phrase in quotes to find it exactly.
  • Transliteration. Type the Arabic sounds the way you would spell them. Long vowels, doubled letters and apostrophes are ignored, so raheem and rahim, or alhamdulillah and al-hamdu lillaah, find the same ayat. This is how to find an ayah you have heard but cannot place.
  • Arabic. Type with or without harakat. Alef forms, ta marbuta and alef maqsura are treated as the same letter.
  • Ayah numbers and surah names. 2:255, 18:10, 112 or Yasin.

Why some Arabic words need a second try

The Quran is written in the Uthmani script, which spells a few words differently from modern Arabic. صلاة (salah) is written ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ, and some long vowels are a small alef above the letter. The search reads those small alefs both ways, so most words are found either way. If a modern spelling finds nothing, try the word without its long vowels, or search the transliteration instead.

A translation is not the Quran

An English search finds the words a translator chose, not the Arabic itself. One Arabic word can be translated several ways, and different words can share one English word. For a study of how a word is used, search the Arabic too, and read each ayah in its place in the surah. Every result links to the ayah on its surah page, where you can read what comes before and after.

The whole Quran text loads on your first search: about 700 KB compressed, so it takes a moment on a slow connection. After that every search is instant.

Questions

Good to know

How do I find an ayah when I only remember some words?

Type the words you remember in English, or the sounds in transliteration, such as "wa qul rabbi zidni". Transliteration search ignores spelling differences like long vowels, so close is good enough.

How do I find what surah an ayah is from?

Search a phrase from it. Each result shows the surah name and ayah number, and links to the ayah inside its surah.

Can I search the Quran in Arabic?

Yes. Type the Arabic word with or without harakat. Different alef forms, ta marbuta and alef maqsura are matched as one letter.

Which English translation does the search use?

Sahih International, one of the most widely used English translations. The transliteration is the Tanzil scheme.

How many times is a word mentioned in the Quran?

The search shows how many ayat contain the word. That counts ayat, not repetitions inside one ayah, and it counts the English translation, so it is a guide rather than an exact Arabic word count.
