Qalqalah, the echo of five letters

Five letters bounce when they have a sukun. Here is how to make that echo, how strong it should be, and real examples from the short surahs to listen to.

The five letters

Gathered in the phrase قُطْبُ جَدٍّ (quṭbu jadd): ق ط ب ج د. They are letters that are both shiddah (the sound is held back) and jahr (the voice is not released with breath), so when they are sakin they need a slight release to be heard.

Light, strong and strongest

Qalqalah sughra: the light bounce

A qalqalah letter with sukun in the middle of a word or a passage. Give it a small, clean release, just enough to be heard, and move on.

Al-Alaq 96:1qaf with sukun

Al-Qadr 97:5ṭa with sukun

Al-Alaq 96:10ba with sukun

Al-Alaq 96:19jim with sukun

Al-Ala 87:14dal with sukun

Qalqalah kubra: the strong bounce when you stop

When you stop on a word that ends in a qalqalah letter, the letter becomes sakin and the bounce is stronger and clearer.

At-Tariq 86:1stopping on qaf

Al-Buruj 85:20stopping on ṭa

Al-Buruj 85:1stopping on jim

Al-Ikhlas 112:4stopping on dal

With shaddah: the strongest

Stopping on a qalqalah letter that has a shaddah gives the strongest bounce, because the letter is doubled and then released. Some teachers call this qalqalah akbar.

Al-Masad 111:1stopping on ba with shaddah

Guide

How to make qalqalah, without adding a vowel

Qalqalah means “shaking” or “echoing”. When one of the five letters ق ط ب ج د has a sukun, the reciter releases it with a slight bounce so it is heard clearly. Without it, a sakin ب or د would almost disappear, because these letters hold the sound back completely.

The right sound

Bring the tongue or lips to the letter's place, press, and release quickly, letting a short echo come out. The echo is not a vowel. It should not sound like a, i or u. Many teachers say it leans slightly towards the vowel before it; others say it is neutral. Either way, it must never become a full harakah.

When it happens

  • Sughra (light): a sakin qalqalah letter in the middle of a word or passage, as in ٱقْرَأْ.
  • Kubra (strong): stopping on a qalqalah letter at the end of a word, as in ٱلْفَلَقِ read as al-falaq.
  • With shaddah (strongest): stopping on a doubled qalqalah letter, as in وَتَبَّ.

A qalqalah letter with a vowel (fatha, kasrah or dammah) has no qalqalah: the vowel already releases it.

Common mistakes

  • Adding a vowel: saying “yalidu” or “aqara” instead of a clean release. This can change the word.
  • Bouncing too hard in sughra: the mid-word bounce is light.
  • Forgetting it when stopping: al-falaq, al-buruj and aḥad end with a clear bounce.
  • Bouncing the wrong letters: ك and ت are not qalqalah letters, even though they are similar.
  • Doubling the letter: a sakin د is one dal released, not two.

Practise with Juz 30

Surahs Al-Falaq, Al-Ikhlas, Al-Masad, Al-Alaq and Al-Buruj are full of qalqalah. Play each example above, then recite the surah with the recitation player on repeat and listen for every bounce.

Questions

Good to know

What are the 5 qalqalah letters?

ق ط ب ج د, remembered as qutbu jadd.

What are the types of qalqalah?

Sughra, the light bounce on a sakin letter mid-word, and kubra, the strong bounce when you stop on it. Many teachers add a strongest level when the stopped letter has a shaddah.

Does qalqalah happen with a vowel?

No. Only when the letter has a sukun, written or because you stop on it.

Is qalqalah in Al-Ikhlas?

Yes: lam yalid wa lam yūlad has a light qalqalah on each dal, and aḥad has a strong one when you stop at the end of each ayah.
