Guide
Packing for Umrah, what matters and why
The essentials for Umrah are few: your passport and visa, your ihram, your medicines and a way to pay. Everything else makes the journey easier. The checklist above is grouped so you can pack one bag at a time, and you can switch the ihram section to men, women or both.
Ihram for men
Men wear two plain unstitched sheets: the izar around the waist and the rida over the shoulders. Sewn clothing that is shaped to the body, such as trousers, shirts and underwear, is not worn, and the head stays uncovered. Footwear must leave the ankle bones and the middle of the top of the foot bare, which is why simple sandals or slippers are best. A belt or pouch belt to hold the izar is allowed.
Ihram for women
Women wear their normal modest clothes in any colour, usually plain and loose. There is no special garment. The face is not covered with a niqab that touches it; if a woman covers her face in front of men, she keeps the cloth off the face, for example with a cap or visor. Socks and shoes are fine.
A man may not wear stitched clothes shaped to the body, may not cover his head or face, and his footwear must leave the middle bone on the top of the foot bare. A woman wears her normal clothes and does not let a cloth touch her face. Perfume, scented soap and scented lotion are not allowed for either once in ihram.
Other madhhabs
- Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali
- The same rules for clothes and perfume. These schools also forbid gloves for women in ihram, based on the hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari 1838; the Hanafi school's position on gloves differs, so ask your teacher.
No scent once you are in ihram
Perfume is forbidden in ihram, so pack unscented soap, shampoo, deodorant, sunscreen and wipes. Men may use perfume on the body before making the intention, and many people do; just do not put it on the ihram cloth.
Health and heat
Makkah is hot for most of the year, and tawaf and sai mean several kilometres of walking. Carry water, rest between the rites, and treat blisters early. Keep your medicines in their original boxes with the prescription, in your hand luggage.
What not to worry about
You can buy almost anything in Makkah and Madinah, including ihram sheets, sandals, prayer mats and Zamzam bottles. If you forget something on this list, you can usually find it near the Haram.
For the rites themselves, see the Umrah guide, and find every place on the Makkah map and the Madinah map.
- Sahih al-Bukhari 1838, on what a person in ihram does not wear.
- Al-Marghinani, al-Hidayah, Kitab al-Hajj; Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar. The other madhhabs' positions are summarised from their standard manuals.
