Guide

Eid al-Adha, the festival of the sacrifice

Eid al-Adha is the 10th of Dhul Hijjah, the day after the pilgrims stand at Arafah. In 2027 it is expected on Sunday 16 May 2027 by the Umm al-Qura calendar, with the Day of Arafah on Saturday 15 May. Where Dhul Hijjah begins a day later by local sighting, Eid is on Monday 17 May. Eid al-Adha remembers the Prophet Ibrahim's readiness to sacrifice his son at Allah's command, and Allah's ransom of him.

Wa fadainaahu bizibhin 'azeem

"And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice,"

Quran 37:107, translation by Sahih International.

The sunnahs of the day, with their hadith

  • Bathe, use miswak and wear your best. As on Eid al-Fitr: Ibn Umar bathed before going out, and Umar's words "adorn yourself with it for Eid" show the practice.1
  • Eat nothing until after the prayer. Buraydah said the Prophet ﷺ would not go out on the day of al-Fitr until he had eaten, and would not eat on the day of al-Adha until he had prayed.2 Many begin the day's eating with meat from their own qurbani.
  • Say the takbir aloud on the way to the prayer. All four schools agree it is said aloud on this Eid.
  • Go by one route and return by another.3
  • Sacrifice after the prayer, not before. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever sacrifices before the prayer has only slaughtered for himself; whoever sacrifices after the prayer has completed his rite and followed the way of the Muslims."4

Fa salli li rabbika wanhar

"So pray to your Lord and sacrifice [to Him alone]."

Quran 108:2, translation by Sahih International.

Cutting hair and nails before the sacrifice

Umm Salamah reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: "When the ten days begin and one of you intends to offer a sacrifice, let him not take anything from his hair or his skin."5 In 2027 the ten days begin at sunset on Thursday 6 May.

Hanafi position

Not cutting the hair and nails from 1 Dhul Hijjah until your animal is sacrificed is mustahabb (recommended) for the one offering qurbani, not obligatory. Cutting them is not a sin and does not affect the qurbani.6

Other madhhabs
Shafi'i
Cutting them is makruh (disliked) for the one who will sacrifice.
Maliki
Refraining is recommended; cutting is disliked.
Hanbali
Refraining is obligatory in the relied-upon view, so cutting them is not allowed, though the qurbani is still valid.

The takbir of Eid and of tashriq

Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar, lā ilāha illallāh, wallāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar, wa lillāhil-ḥamd

"Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. There is no god but Allah. Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, and to Allah belongs all praise."

The wording narrated from Ibn Masud (Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah), used in the Hanafi school.

Hanafi position

Saying this takbir once, aloud, after every obligatory prayer is wajib from Fajr on the Day of Arafah (Saturday 15 May 2027) to Asr on 13 Dhul Hijjah (Wednesday 19 May 2027): 23 prayers. Women say it quietly.6

Other madhhabs
Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali
The takbir after prayers in these days is a sunnah. The start and end times differ slightly between the schools.

The Eid prayer

Two rakahs with extra takbirs, prayed in congregation after sunrise and before midday, followed by the khutbah. On Eid al-Adha it is sunnah to pray a little earlier than on Eid al-Fitr, so people can go back to their sacrifice. The step-by-step method, Hanafi first, is on how to pray Eid salah.

Qurbani

Lany yanaalal laaha luhoo muhaa wa laa dimaaa'uhaa wa laakiny yanaaluhut taqwaa minkum; kazaalika sakhkharhaa lakum litukabbirul laaha 'alaa ma hadaakum; wa bashshirul muhsineen

"Their meat will not reach Allah, nor will their blood, but what reaches Him is piety from you. Thus have We subjected them to you that you may glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and give good tidings to the doers of good."

Quran 22:37, translation by Sahih International.

Hanafi position

Qurbani (udhiyah) is wajib on every adult Muslim who is resident, not travelling, and owns wealth at or above the nisab on the days of sacrifice. A sheep or goat is one share; a cow or camel is seven. Its time is from after the Eid prayer on 10 Dhul Hijjah until sunset on the 12th (Tuesday 18 May 2027).6

Other madhhabs
Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali
Qurbani is a confirmed sunnah for those who can afford it, not an obligation. The Maliki and Hanbali schools end its time at sunset on the 12th; the Shafi'i school allows it until sunset on the 13th.

The animals, ages, defects, shares and how to divide the meat, with a share calculator, are on the qurbani page.

What to say on Eid

"Eid Mubarak", blessed Eid, is the greeting most Muslims use today, and it is a good one. The greeting reported from the Companions is:

تَقَبَّلَ اللَّهُ مِنَّا وَمِنْكُمْ

Taqabbalallāhu minnā wa minkum

"May Allah accept from us and from you."

Jubayr ibn Nufayr said the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would say this to one another when they met on the day of Eid. Ibn Hajar, Fath al-Bari, said its chain is hasan.

For the Arabic and replies, see Eid Mubarak meaning and reply. To send a card with your family's names, use the Eid greeting card maker.

No fasting on Eid and the days of tashriq

The Prophet ﷺ said: "The days of tashriq are days of eating and drinking."7 So no voluntary fast is kept from Eid al-Adha to the 13th (Sun 16 May to Wed 19 May 2027). The fast to keep is the one before Eid: the Day of Arafah.

How long is Eid al-Adha?

Eid al-Adha is the 10th of Dhul Hijjah, but the festival runs through the three days of tashriq, the 11th to the 13th, so it is often called a four-day Eid. Qurbani can be made on the first three of those days, and the takbir after prayers continues until Asr on the fourth. In 2027 Eid falls on a Sunday, so in the West many will ask for Monday off as well.

How many days is Eid al-Adha?

Eid is the 10th of Dhul Hijjah, and the three days of tashriq after it, the 11th to the 13th, belong to the festival, so it is often called a four-day Eid.

Can I cut my hair before Eid al-Adha?

If you are offering qurbani, it is recommended in the Hanafi school not to cut your hair or nails from 1 Dhul Hijjah until your animal is sacrificed (Muslim 1977). It is not obligatory, and cutting does not affect the qurbani.

Can you fast on the days of Eid al-Adha?

No. Fasting is not allowed on Eid al-Adha or the three days of tashriq after it (Muslim 1141). The recommended fast is the Day of Arafah, the day before Eid.
