Questions Dress and appearance

Is gold haram for men, including white gold?

Pending review by our scholars

Short answer

Yes. Wearing gold is haram for Muslim men in all four schools, whatever its colour or carat, so white gold and rose gold are included. This covers rings, chains, bracelets, earrings and watches made of gold. Women may wear gold freely.

Hanafi position

Wearing gold in any form is haram for men. An item with a thin gold plating that cannot be separated is treated more lightly by many Hanafi muftis, but it is still better avoided. Gold for a genuine medical need, such as a dental crown, is a separate case.

The four schools agree on this.

Explanation

The Prophet ﷺ held up silk in one hand and gold in the other and said: these two are forbidden to the men of my community. Another hadith says they are lawful for its women. When he saw a man wearing a gold ring, he pulled it off and said that the man had taken a burning coal and put it on his hand. The four schools agree on this ruling.

White and rose gold. These are not different metals. White gold is gold mixed with metals like palladium or nickel and often plated with rhodium. Rose gold is gold mixed with copper. Since the main metal is still gold, the ruling is the same. Platinum, titanium and steel are not gold; whether a man may wear a ring of them is covered in can men wear a silver ring.

Watches. A watch with a solid gold case or bracelet is haram for a man. A steel watch is fine. A watch that is only gold coloured or has a thin gold plating is treated more leniently by many muftis, but it looks like gold and invites doubt, so choose another finish if you can.

Other cases. Using gold cups and plates is haram for men and women alike. Boys should not be dressed in gold jewellery, and the sin falls on whoever dresses them. A gold tooth or crown for a real medical need, when no other material works, is a case to discuss with a mufti. Owning gold as savings is fine for anyone, and zakat is due on it: see zakat on gold.
