Short answer
Yes. Food cooked by a non-Muslim is halal if the ingredients are halal. Avoid pork, alcohol and meat that was not slaughtered in a halal way. In the Hanafi view most supermarket meat in the West does not meet the conditions, so stick to halal meat, fish and vegetarian dishes.
The cook's religion does not affect the food. Meat is halal only from an animal slaughtered by a Muslim or a Jew or Christian with Allah's name pronounced and the throat and vessels properly cut. Leaving the tasmiyah (saying Allah's name) on purpose makes it haram in the Hanafi school. Pots and dishes are treated as clean unless you know impurity is on them.
Other madhhabs
- Shafi'i
- Meat slaughtered properly by a Jew or Christian is halal even if Allah's name was not pronounced, since the tasmiyah is a sunnah.
Explanation
Sharing a meal is a natural way to keep family ties, and the Quran makes the food of the People of the Book lawful. The issue is never who cooked it but what is in it.
- Fine: vegetables, bread, rice, pasta, eggs, dairy, fish, and halal meat you bring. Hanafis allow fish but not most other seafood, so check before eating shellfish.
- Avoid: pork and its products, alcohol, dishes cooked with wine, gelatin from non-halal sources, and ordinary supermarket chicken or beef.
- Pans and utensils: if a pan was used for pork, wash it well before it is used for your food. If it is clean, use it.
Why is regular meat a problem if the Quran allows the food of Christians and Jews? Hanafi scholars say the permission covers meat slaughtered in the way their own scripture teaches, with the name of God. Modern industrial slaughter in most Western plants does not follow either faith's rite, and Allah's name is not said, so the meat does not qualify. Kosher meat is closer, but scholars still differ over it.
Families usually adapt quickly when you explain kindly. Offer to bring a dish or to buy halal meat for family dinners. Check ingredients with our halal checker, and see why Muslims eat halal for a short explanation you can share.
The evidence
Quran, Surah Al-Maaida 5:5
This day [all] good foods have been made lawful, and the food of those who were given the Scripture is lawful for you and your food is lawful for them. And [lawful in marriage are] chaste women from among the believers and chaste women from among those who were given the Scripture before you, when you have given them their due compensation, desiring chastity, not unlawful sexual intercourse or taking [secret] lovers. And whoever denies the faith - his work has become worthless, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers.
The food of Jews and Christians is permitted within the rules of halal.
Sahih al-Bukhari 5478
Sahih... فإن وجدتم غيرها فلا تأكلوا فيها وإن لم تجدوا فاغسلوها وكلوا فيها ...
"If you find other vessels, do not eat from theirs; if you find none, wash them and eat from them."
Utensils used by others may be used after washing.
Where the ruling is recorded
- al-Hidaya, Kitab al-Dhaba'ih. The slaughter of a Jew or Christian is lawful with tasmiyah, and meat is haram if the tasmiyah is left out deliberately.
- Fiqhi Maqalat (Mufti Taqi Usmani), the treatise on machine slaughter and the meat of the People of the Book. Explains why most commercial Western meat does not meet the Hanafi conditions.
- Minhaj al-Talibin (Nawawi), Kitab al-Sayd wa al-Dhaba'ih. The Shafi'i view that the tasmiyah is a sunnah.
