Short answer
Tell them gently, at a time you choose, and show them through better character before you argue about belief. Islam does not require you to announce your conversion, and you can keep it private for a while if telling would put you in danger, but you may never deny your faith when asked except under real threat.
There is no obligation to announce one's Islam. Being kind to parents remains wajib whatever their faith. Denying Islam with the tongue is only excused under genuine coercion, such as a credible threat to life or limb, while the heart stays firm.
The four schools agree on this.
Explanation
For many new Muslims this is the hardest step. There is no set script, but a few things help almost everyone:
- Let them see the change first. More patience, more help around the house, more respect. Families often soften when they see Islam making you kinder.
- Pick a calm moment, one to one or with the parent you are closest to. Avoid holidays and arguments.
- Lead with what stays the same. You still love them, you are still their child, and Islam orders you to honour them.
- Expect questions, not agreement. Answer simply, admit what you do not know yet, and offer a short reading such as our what is Islam guide.
- Keep the door open. Some families need months. Keep visiting and keep calling.
If you are a minor, depend on your family for housing, or fear violence, it is fine to keep your Islam private until you are safe. Pray quietly and live your faith as you can. What is not allowed is to say you have left Islam when you have not, unless you face real coercion. Talk to a trusted imam or a convert support group about your situation. The four schools agree on these principles.
Avoid attacking your family's religion. The Quran forbids insulting what others hold sacred, and harsh words usually close hearts. Wisdom and good manners are the sunnah of the prophets in calling their own families. See how to treat non-Muslim parents.
The evidence
Quran, Surah An-Nahl 16:125
Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has strayed from His way, and He is most knowing of who is [rightly] guided.
Inviting others, including family, should be done with wisdom and gentleness.
Quran, Surah An-Nahl 16:106
Whoever disbelieves in Allah after his belief... except for one who is forced [to renounce his religion] while his heart is secure in faith. But those who [willingly] open their breasts to disbelief, upon them is wrath from Allah, and for them is a great punishment;
Words of disbelief are excused only under coercion while faith stays firm in the heart.
Quran, Surah Al-An'aam 6:108
And do not insult those they invoke other than Allah, lest they insult Allah in enmity without knowledge. Thus We have made pleasing to every community their deeds. Then to their Lord is their return, and He will inform them about what they used to do.
Do not insult what others worship, which would only provoke hostility.
Sahih al-Bukhari 69
Sahih...
"Make things easy and do not make them hard; give good news and do not drive people away."
The guiding principle when sharing your faith with family.
Where the ruling is recorded
- al-Hidaya, Kitab al-Ikrah (coercion). A person forced by a real threat may utter words of disbelief while the heart is firm in faith.
