The three ashras and their duas

Days 1 to 10 · First ashra

Popularly called the ten days of mercy (rahmah). The popular dua for it, Rabbighfir warham wa anta khayrur-rahimin, is from the Quran, but no hadith ties it to these days.

وَقُل رَّبِّ ٱغْفِرْ وَٱرْحَمْ وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ

Wa qur Rabbigh fir warham wa Anta khairur raahimeen

"And, [O Muhammad], say, "My Lord, forgive and have mercy, and You are the best of the merciful.""

Quran 23:118, translation by Sahih International.

Days 11 to 20 · Second ashra

Popularly called the ten days of forgiveness (maghfirah). The popular wording for it is not in the hadith. This short istighfar is, and the Prophet ﷺ said it more than seventy times a day.

أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ

Astaghfirullāha wa atūbu ilayh

"I seek Allah's forgiveness and turn to Him in repentance."

Sahih al-Bukhari 6307, from Abu Hurayrah.

Days 21 to the end · The last ten

Popularly called the days of freedom from the Fire. The common Allahumma ajirni minan-nar comes from a report graded weak, and is not tied to these days. The dua the Prophet ﷺ taught for the last ten nights is this one.

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي

Allāhumma innaka ʿafuwwun tuḥibbul-ʿafwa faʿfu ʿannī

"O Allah, You are Pardoning and love to pardon, so pardon me."

Jami at-Tirmidhi 3513, from Aishah, graded sahih by al-Albani.

Guide

Counting the days of Ramadan, and why your count may differ

The day of Ramadan is the number of the fast you keep today. The tool above works it out for the current date in your country, from the Umm al-Qura calendar, and lets you move it by a day if your masjid began Ramadan a day later. In 2027, Ramadan 1448 is expected to begin on Monday 8 February 2027, so 1 March is the 22nd fast and the last ten nights begin at sunset on Saturday 27 February.

Days and nights

An Islamic night comes before its day. The first night of Ramadan, with the first taraweeh, is the evening of Sunday 7 February, and the first fast is the next morning. So when the tool says it is the 20th fast today, tonight after Maghrib is the 21st night, the first of the last ten. Laylat al-Qadr is sought in the odd nights: the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th and 29th.

Why your masjid may be a day apart

Ramadan begins when the crescent is seen on the evening of 29 Shaban, or after Shaban completes 30 days. In 2027 the new moon is born at 15:56 GMT on Saturday 6 February, too late to be seen that evening anywhere, so Shaban runs to 30 days by the Umm al-Qura calendar and Ramadan begins on Monday 8 February. Countries whose Shaban began a day later, often in South Asia, seek the crescent on the evening of Sunday 7 February instead, and may begin on Tuesday 9 February. Each community counts from its own start.

If you travel during Ramadan

Hanafi position

Fast and celebrate Eid with the people of the place you are in. If you end up with only 28 fasts because you moved to a place that began later or ended earlier, make up one day after Eid, since a month is never less than 29 days. If your count reaches 31, keep fasting with the local people until their Eid.1

Other madhhabs
Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali
Broadly the same: the traveller follows the people of the place he reaches for the end of the month, and makes up a day if he has fasted fewer than 29.

The three ashras, honestly

Many people divide Ramadan into three ashras of ten days: mercy, forgiveness and freedom from the Fire. This comes from a long hadith narrated from Salman al-Farsi that hadith scholars grade weak, and no authentic hadith fixes a special dua for each ashra. What is authentic is that mercy, forgiveness and freedom from the Fire are offered throughout the month.2 The cards above show the popular dua for each part with its real status, and a sourced dua you can use instead. The full discussion is on the three ashras of Ramadan.

How many days is Ramadan?

Ramadan has 29 or 30 days, like every Hijri month. By the Umm al-Qura calendar, Ramadan 1448 has 29 days, with Eid al-Fitr on Tuesday 9 March 2027. But the crescent of Shawwal will be very young on the evening of Monday 8 March, so many communities may fast 30 days and celebrate Eid al-Fitr on Wednesday 10 March.

  1. Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar, Kitab al-Sawm, on the traveller whose count of days differs; the other madhhabs' positions are summarised from their standard manuals.
  2. Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah and al-Bayhaqi, Shuab al-Iman, from Salman al-Farsi (weak). Authentic: Sahih Muslim 1079; Sahih al-Bukhari 38; Jami at-Tirmidhi 682.
