Guide
Eid al-Fitr, the festival of breaking the fast, is the 1st of Shawwal, the day after Ramadan ends. In 2027 it is expected on Tuesday 9 March 2027 by the Umm al-Qura calendar. If the crescent is not seen on the evening of Monday 8 March, Ramadan completes 30 days and Eid is on Wednesday 10 March 2027. Because the new moon is only a few hours old that evening, many communities that wait for a sighting expect Wednesday. Your masjid will confirm on the night.
Anas reported that when the Prophet ﷺ came to Madinah, its people had two days of play. He said: "Allah has given you something better than them: the day of al-Adha and the day of al-Fitr."1 On an Eid day Abu Bakr found two girls singing in the Prophet's ﷺ house, and the Prophet ﷺ said: "Every people has its Eid, and this is our Eid."2
Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar, lā ilāha illallāh, wallāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar, wa lillāhil-ḥamd
"Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. There is no god but Allah. Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, and to Allah belongs all praise."
The wording narrated from Ibn Masud (Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah), used in the Hanafi school.
On the way to the Eid al-Fitr prayer the takbir is said; Imam Abu Hanifa held it is said quietly on this Eid, while his two students Abu Yusuf and Muhammad held it is said aloud, as on Eid al-Adha. Many Hanafi masjids follow the second view. The wording is two takbirs, the tahlil, two takbirs and the tahmid, as above.8
The Eid prayer is two rakahs with extra takbirs, prayed in congregation after the sun has risen a little and before midday, with the khutbah after it. There is no adhan or iqamah. The full method, Hanafi first, is on how to pray Eid salah.
The Eid prayer is wajib on everyone for whom Jumuah is obligatory, with six extra takbirs, three in each rakah. It is not prayed alone, and a missed Eid prayer is not made up.8
Zakat al-fitr is "a purification for the fasting person from idle talk and obscenity, and food for the poor. Whoever pays it before the prayer, it is an accepted zakat; whoever pays it after the prayer, it is ordinary charity."9 Work out what you owe for your family with the zakat al-fitr calculator.
Zakat al-fitr is wajib on every Muslim who, on the morning of Eid, owns wealth at the nisab beyond his basic needs, for himself and his minor children. A full year of ownership is not needed. It is half a sa of wheat or one sa of dates, barley or raisins, or their value in money, which many Hanafi scholars say is better today. It may be paid any time in Ramadan, and should be paid before the Eid prayer. If it is delayed, it is still owed.10
"Eid Mubarak", blessed Eid, is the greeting most Muslims use today, and it is a good one. The greeting reported from the Companions is:
تَقَبَّلَ اللَّهُ مِنَّا وَمِنْكُمْ
Taqabbalallāhu minnā wa minkum
"May Allah accept from us and from you."
Jubayr ibn Nufayr said the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would say this to one another when they met on the day of Eid. Ibn Hajar, Fath al-Bari, said its chain is hasan.

Fasting on the day of Eid is not allowed. Umar said: "These are two days on which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade fasting: the day you break your fast after Ramadan, and the day you eat from your sacrifice."11 From the next day you can begin the six days of Shawwal.
In the sharia, Eid al-Fitr is one day, the 1st of Shawwal, and the Eid prayer is on that morning. Many Muslim countries give three days of public holiday, and families often celebrate for three days. In the West most people take the one day off, and book the day after as well because the date is only confirmed the night before.
