Dua for a job, and for halal provision

There is no special hadith dua just for getting a job, but the Quran and Sunnah have duas for provision that fit it exactly. The best known is the dua of Musa, Rabbi inni lima anzalta ilayya min khayrin faqir, which he made when he was alone, jobless and far from home. Allah answered it with work, a home and a wife.

Dua 1: The dua of Musa before he found work

Rabbi innī limā anzalta ilayya min khayrin faqīr

My Lord, indeed I am, for whatever good You would send down to me, in need.

Quran 28:24, translation by Sahih International

Dua 2: After Fajr, for good provision

Allāhumma innī asʾaluka ʿilman nāfiʿā, wa rizqan ṭayyibā, wa ʿamalan mutaqabbalā

O Allah, I ask You for knowledge that benefits, provision that is good, and deeds that are accepted.

Sunan Ibn Majah 925, graded sahih by al-Albani

Dua 3: For halal income

Allāhummak-finī bi-ḥalālika ʿan ḥarāmik, wa aghninī bi-faḍlika ʿamman siwāk

O Allah, let what You have made halal be enough for me, so that I need nothing haram, and by Your grace make me free of need of anyone but You.

Jami at-Tirmidhi 3563, graded hasan

Dua 4: Taught to every new Muslim

Allāhummagh-fir lī, warḥamnī, wahdinī, wa ʿāfinī, warzuqnī

O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me, keep me well and provide for me.

Sahih Muslim 2697

Dua 5: The dua of Isa

Warzuqnā wa anta khayrur-rāziqīn

And provide for us, and You are the best of providers.

Guide

When and how to say it

There is no special hadith dua just for getting a job, but the Quran and Sunnah have duas for provision that fit it exactly. The best known is the dua of Musa, Rabbi inni lima anzalta ilayya min khayrin faqir, which he made when he was alone, jobless and far from home. Allah answered it with work, a home and a wife.

The story behind Dua 1

Musa had fled Egypt with nothing. At the wells of Madyan he helped two women water their flock, then sat in the shade and said this dua (28:24). He did not ask for anything specific: he told Allah he was in need of whatever good He would send. Within the same passage one of the women returned to invite him, her father took him in, and offered him work for eight years and the hand of one of his daughters in marriage (28:25-27). It is the dua for anyone looking for work, a fresh start or a way forward.

When to say these duas

  • After Fajr: the Prophet ﷺ said Dua 2 after the salam of the morning prayer, every day.1
  • Before applying or an interview: pray istikhara if you must choose between offers, leave home with Bismillahi tawakkaltu alallah, and say the dua for confidence of Musa before you speak.
  • In sujood and the last third of the night, in your own words, for the job you hope for, if it is good for you.
  • When money is tight: Dua 3 was taught by Ali to a man who could not pay what he owed.2 See also the dua for debt.

Work is part of tawakkul

The Prophet ﷺ said: "If you relied on Allah as He should be relied on, He would provide for you as He provides for the birds. They go out hungry in the morning and come back full in the evening."3 The birds go out. Trust in Allah is not sitting at home: it is sending the applications, learning the skill and turning up, while knowing that the result is from Him. He also said: "No one has eaten better food than what he eats from the work of his own hands, and the Prophet of Allah Dawud used to eat from the work of his hands."4 Allah says: "And when the prayer has been concluded, disperse within the land and seek from the bounty of Allah" (62:10).

Provision is written, and it is wide

Rizq is not only a salary. It is health, time, family, knowledge and peace of mind. Allah is Ar-Razzaq, the Provider, and "whoever fears Allah, He will make for him a way out, and will provide for him from where he does not expect" (65:2-3). For more, see Quran verses about rizq.

What about Surah Waqiah for rizq?

A report says that whoever recites Surah Al-Waqiah every night will never be struck by poverty. Hadith scholars have graded its chain weak, so it should not be called a proven sunnah. Reciting Surah Al-Waqiah is good in itself, like all of the Quran.
