Jami at-Tirmidhi, narrated by Shaddad ibn Aws. At-Tirmidhi called it hasan; al-Albani graded it weak (daif)

Widely shared. Its chain is disputed, so it is labelled here; the meaning is supported by the ayat above.

From the Companions and early scholars

Companion

The world has set off, going away, and the Hereafter has set off, coming closer, and each of them has its children. So be children of the Hereafter, and do not be children of this world. Today there is action and no reckoning, and tomorrow there is reckoning and no action.

Ali ibn Abi Talib, reported by al-Bukhari in his Sahih without a chain (Book of Softening the Hearts)

Companion

When you reach the evening, do not wait for the morning, and when you reach the morning, do not wait for the evening. Take from your health for your illness, and from your life for your death.

What Islam teaches about death, in its own words

Islamic quotes about death are not meant to frighten for the sake of it. They aim to wake a person up. The Quran says three times that "every soul will taste death" (3:185, 21:35, 29:57), and the Prophet ﷺ told us to remember it often, because a person who remembers death uses his life better. Death is described as a return, not an end: "Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return" (2:156).

The themes in these quotes

  • No one escapes it: wherever you are, even in high towers (4:78), and no one knows the land they will die in (31:34).
  • Deeds stay with you: family and wealth turn back at the grave, and only deeds remain (Bukhari and Muslim). Three things keep earning reward after death: ongoing charity, useful knowledge and a child who prays for you (Muslim 1631).
  • Hope for the believer: the soul at rest is invited back to its Lord, pleased and pleasing (89:27 to 30), and whoever loves to meet Allah, Allah loves to meet him.

Weak and unsourced quotes about death

"The wise one holds himself to account and works for what comes after death" is one of the most shared hadith on this subject, but its chain is weak according to al-Albani, so we show it with that grading. Many other lines shared as hadith about death, such as long descriptions of the soul's journey with no reference, have no reliable source at all. When a quote names no book, treat it as a saying of an unknown person, not as a hadith.

When someone has died

If you are here because you have lost someone, the Sunnah is to say "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajiun" and to ask Allah for something better, to pray for the one who has died, and to be patient. See the dua for the deceased and how to pray the janazah prayer. May Allah have mercy on them.
