Questions Belief

Does Allah hate me?

Checked by our team

Short answer

If you are worried that Allah hates you, that worry is itself a sign of faith. Allah forgives all sins for the one who turns back (39:53), loves those who repent (2:222), and says, "I am as My servant thinks of Me." Hardship and sin do not mean He has rejected you.

Hanafi position

Despairing of Allah's mercy is a major sin, and hope (raja) is required alongside fear. Words of hatred toward Allah said deliberately and by choice are kufr, but unwanted thoughts you dislike, or words that slip out in overwhelming grief without intent, are treated differently. Speak to a scholar if this weighs on you.

The four schools agree on this.

Explanation

People who ask this are usually in pain: they keep falling into a sin, their duas seem unanswered, or life has hit them hard. The fact that you care whether Allah is pleased with you shows the faith in your heart is alive. Someone Allah had truly turned away from would not be troubled by the question.

Allah tells those who have wronged themselves, "Do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins" (39:53). He "loves those who are constantly repentant" (2:222), which assumes they keep needing to repent. The Prophet ﷺ said that Allah says, "I am as My servant thinks of Me, and I am with him when he remembers Me." He also said that if people did not sin, Allah would replace them with people who sin and then seek His forgiveness, and He would forgive them.

Hardship is not proof of anger. Allah says He will test people with fear, hunger and loss, and then: "give good tidings to the patient" (2:155). The prophets, the people Allah loves most, were tested most. See Does Allah test those He loves?

Some people even find thoughts like "I hate Allah" coming into their mind, and are horrified. Thoughts you hate and push away are not counted against you; read Is it a sin to have bad thoughts about Allah? If grief, depression or anger is behind these feelings, they deserve care too: see Depression in Islam. If you ever have thoughts of harming yourself, call your local emergency number or a crisis line now.

What to do now: make wudu, pray two rak'ahs, and tell Allah honestly how you feel. Say astaghfirullah, do one good deed today, and keep going. Read how to repent.

The evidence

Quran, Surah Az-Zumar 39:53

Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."

No sinner should give up on Allah's forgiveness.

Quran, Surah Al-Baqara 2:222

And they ask you about menstruation. Say, "It is harm, so keep away from wives during menstruation. And do not approach them until they are pure. And when they have purified themselves, then come to them from where Allah has ordained for you. Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves."

Allah loves those who keep returning to Him.

Quran, Surah Al-Baqara 2:155

And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient,

Hardship is a test, not a sign of rejection.

Where the ruling is recorded

  • al-Aqida al-Tahawiyya, Section on hope and fear. States that feeling safe from Allah and despairing of His mercy both lead away from Islam, and the right path lies between them.
  • Radd al-Muhtar (Ibn Abidin), Bab al-Murtadd (chapter on apostasy). Explains that words of kufr count only when said knowingly and by choice, not by slip or overpowering compulsion.
