Short answer
The Horn is blown, everything dies, then it is blown again and all people rise from their graves. They are gathered on one plain, the Prophet ﷺ intercedes for the judgement to begin, books of deeds are handed out and deeds are weighed. Everyone crosses the Sirat over Hell, and the believers enter Jannah.
Belief in the resurrection of the body, the reckoning, the scales, the books of deeds, the Pool (hawd), the Sirat and the intercession is part of Sunni creed, as set out in al-Fiqh al-Akbar and al-Aqida al-Tahawiyya. Denying the resurrection is kufr.
The four schools agree on this.
Explanation
The Quran and sahih hadith describe the Day in stages:
- The Horn. "The Horn will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will fall dead except whom Allah wills. Then it will be blown again, and at once they will be standing, looking on" (39:68).
- The gathering. People are raised barefoot, naked and uncircumcised, as the Prophet ﷺ said. The sun is brought close, and people sweat according to their deeds. Seven kinds of people are shaded by Allah on a day when there is no other shade.
- The intercession. People go from prophet to prophet asking for the judgement to begin, until they come to Muhammad ﷺ, who prostrates and is given permission to intercede. See Will the Prophet intercede for us?
- The reckoning. Each person receives a book of deeds, in the right hand or the left (69:19-25). "We place the scales of justice for the Day of Resurrection, so no soul will be treated unjustly at all" (21:47).
- The Pool. He ﷺ will have a pool (al-hawd) whose drink is whiter than milk; whoever drinks from it will never thirst again.
- The Sirat. A bridge over Hell that every person crosses at the speed of their deeds. See the Sirat bridge.
- The final home. The believers enter Jannah. Those who died in disbelief remain in the Fire, and sinful believers who enter it are later brought out. See Will Muslims stay in Hell forever?
No one knows when it will come (7:187). What we control is how we arrive. Read What happens after you die? and Barzakh and the afterlife.
The evidence
Quran, Surah Az-Zumar 39:68
And the Horn will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will fall dead except whom Allah wills. Then it will be blown again, and at once they will be standing, looking on.
The two blasts of the Horn: death of all, then resurrection.
Quran, Surah Al-Anbiyaa 21:47
And We place the scales of justice for the Day of Resurrection, so no soul will be treated unjustly at all. And if there is [even] the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it forth. And sufficient are We as accountant.
Deeds will be weighed with perfect justice.
Quran, Surah Al-Haaqqa 69:19
So as for he who is given his record in his right hand, he will say, "Here, read my record!
