Questions Dress and appearance

Can a Muslim bride wear a white wedding dress?

Checked by our team

Short answer

Yes. A white gown is no longer a Christian religious sign, and white is a colour the Prophet ﷺ praised. The usual rules apply: in front of non-mahram men the bride is covered with hijab, so a fitted or open gown is for a women-only room, her husband and her mahrams.

Hanafi position

Wearing a white bridal gown is permissible; it is a fashion, not a rite of worship. Displaying the bride's adornment to non-mahram men is haram, so an uncovered gown is worn only before women, her husband and mahrams.

The four schools agree on this.

Explanation

The Prophet ﷺ said: wear white clothes, for they are among the best of your clothes. Muslim brides around the world wear white, red, gold, green and many other colours, and none of them is required. The white wedding gown became popular in the West as a fashion, and today it does not mark anyone's religion, so the rule against imitating other faiths does not forbid it; see dressing like non-Muslims.

The real questions are about covering. Allah tells believing women not to show their adornment except to their husbands, close relatives and other women. A bride is at her most adorned on her wedding day, so:

  • In a mixed gathering: wear a loose gown with sleeves and a hijab, or cover the dress with an abaya or cape.
  • In a women-only hall: the gown can be as you like, within decency.
  • Photos and videos: use a female photographer for unveiled moments, and be careful where pictures are shared.
  • Rituals: avoid parts taken from church weddings, such as vows said at an altar, which belong to another faith's worship.

Quran, Surah An-Noor 24:31

And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.

The bride's adornment is shown only to her husband, mahrams and women.
