Questions Dress and appearance

Can Muslim men wear a dhikr counter ring?

Checked by our team

Short answer

This is a new question with no classical text. In the Hanafi school a man may wear only a silver ring, and other metals are makruh tahrimi, so many muftis advise men against steel or plastic counter rings, while others treat them as a tool, not jewellery. Counting on your fingers is the Sunnah and needs no device. The Shafi'i school allows non-silver rings for men.

Hanafi position

Men may wear only a silver ring as adornment; rings of iron, steel, brass and copper are makruh tahrimi. A ring-shaped counter worn on the finger resembles a ring, so muftis differ; holding a hand counter or counting on the fingers is the cautious course.

Rings of iron, steel and other metals are allowed for men, so a counter ring raises no problem of metal for them.

Explanation

Dhikr rings are small counters worn on the index finger and clicked with the thumb. Some are digital and some are smart rings linked to an app. They are popular because they make it easy to count tasbih at work or while driving.

The ring question. In the Hanafi school the only ring a man may wear is silver, and rings of iron, steel, brass or copper are makruh tahrimi; see can men wear a silver ring. Most counter rings are steel, plastic or a mix. Some Hanafi muftis say a ring-shaped device on the finger takes the ruling of a ring, so men should not wear it. Others say it is a counting tool worn for a purpose, like a watch, so it is not jewellery. Since this is a new matter, ask your local mufti.

The simple solutions. Count on your fingers. The Prophet ﷺ told women to count their tasbih on their fingertips, because the fingers will be questioned and made to speak. You can also use prayer beads, a hand-held counter or the tasbih counter on your phone, none of which raise the ring question.

Women. Women have more room with rings, but the Hanafi texts dislike iron and brass rings for women too, so a counter held in the hand is the cautious choice for everyone.
