Questions Dress and appearance

Can you bleach or tint your eyebrows in Islam?

Checked by our team

Short answer

Yes, for women. Bleaching or tinting changes the colour of the hairs without removing any, so it is not the plucking (namas) the hadith forbids. Bleaching dark hair on the upper lip or cheeks is also fine. Use safe products and keep it as adornment, not display. Men should not bleach or tint their brows for beauty.

Hanafi position

Changing the colour of the eyebrows or facial hair by bleaching or tinting is permissible for a woman, since no hair is removed and the brows keep their shape. For men, doing it for beauty falls under imitation of women.

The four schools agree on this.

Explanation

Ibn Mas'ud reported a curse on women who tattoo, who pluck their eyebrows and who file their teeth for beauty. The Hanafi scholars explain the forbidden plucking (namas) as removing hair from the brows to thin or reshape them; see is plucking eyebrows haram. Bleaching and tinting remove nothing. They are closer to dyeing hair, which is allowed.

Eyebrows. Lightening dark brows to match lighter hair, or tinting pale brows so they show, is allowed for women. Do not bleach them almost invisible so you can draw a new shape over them, since that reaches the same result the ruling forbids. A tint leaves no layer once it has set, so wudu is valid. Brow lamination that only sets the hairs is similar, but any glue or gel left on them must be washed off before wudu.

Facial hair. A woman with dark hair on her upper lip, chin or cheeks may bleach it. Removing it is also allowed and even recommended in the Hanafi texts, since it is not a normal feminine feature.

Men. A man bleaching or tinting his eyebrows for looks copies a women's beauty practice, so avoid it. Colouring a grey beard or hair follows the rules of dyeing; see dyeing your hair.

Safety. Bleach near the eyes can burn the skin and harm the eyes. Use products made for the face and do a patch test first.

The evidence

Quran, Surah Al-A'raaf 7:32

Say, "Who has forbidden the adornment of Allah which He has produced for His servants and the good [lawful] things of provision?" Say, "They are for those who believe during the worldly life [but] exclusively for them on the Day of Resurrection." Thus do We detail the verses for a people who know.

Adornment that does not change Allah's creation is lawful.

Quran, Surah Al-Baqara 2:195

And spend in the way of Allah and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.

Products that harm the body should be avoided.

Sahih al-Bukhari 4886

Sahih

"Allah has cursed the women who tattoo and have tattoos done, who pluck their eyebrows, and who file their teeth for beauty."

The prohibition is on removing brow hair, which bleaching does not do.
