Questions Dress and appearance

Is wearing perfume sunnah for men?

Checked by our team

Short answer

Yes. The Prophet ﷺ loved perfume, never refused it when offered, and told men to wear it for Jumuah, so it is a sunnah for men, especially on Friday, Eid and when meeting people. It is forbidden in ihram. A woman wears perfume at home and among women, not where non-mahram men will smell it. The four schools agree.

Hanafi position

Wearing perfume is sunnah for men and especially recommended for Jumuah, the two Eids, the mosque and gatherings. It is forbidden in ihram. A woman may wear it freely at home, for her husband and among women.

The four schools agree on this.

Explanation

The Prophet ﷺ said that among the things of this world, women and perfume were made beloved to him, and the coolness of his eyes was placed in prayer. Anas said he never turned perfume away when it was offered. For Friday, he told every adult to bathe, use the siwak and put on perfume if he could find some; see the Sunnahs of Friday.

When it is most recommended. Jumuah, the two Eids, going to the mosque, meeting people, and for your wife. Smelling good is part of the cleanliness Islam loves, and it is a kindness to the people beside you in the prayer rows.

What kind. Any lawful scent is fine: attar, oud, musk, bakhoor, cologne or body spray. Most alcohol-based perfumes are fine in the Hanafi school, as explained in is perfume with alcohol haram. A hadith in Tirmidhi describes men's perfume as one whose scent shows and whose colour is hidden, which suits colourless oils and sprays.

Limits. Do not use scented products in ihram; see perfume in ihram. Putting on perfume does not break the fast, but in the Hanafi school deliberately breathing in bakhoor smoke does. A woman may perfume herself at home, for her husband and among women, but should not go out wearing a scent that non-mahram men will notice. Keep it moderate in the mosque so it does not overwhelm others.

The evidence

Quran, Surah Al-A'raaf 7:32

Say, "Who has forbidden the adornment of Allah which He has produced for His servants and the good [lawful] things of provision?" Say, "They are for those who believe during the worldly life [but] exclusively for them on the Day of Resurrection." Thus do We detail the verses for a people who know.

Good things like perfume are lawful blessings for believers.
